TV-Series
Description
Aoba Tsuzaki is the main protagonist of the first story arc of the Jinki series, serving as the primary pilot of the Moribito Type-02, a giant robotic unit known as a Jinki. She is a 13-year-old girl with long, straight black hair that reaches her waist, which grows even longer in later years, and violet eyes. Her most distinctive personal trait is her intense passion for building plastic models, a hobby that is considered unusual for a girl her age. She has won prizes in modeler competitions and is particularly fond of the smell of model cement. This enthusiasm for mecha is a driving force in her life and directly contributes to her aptitude for piloting.

Aoba's background is marked by a profound lack of familial affection. She was raised by her maternal grandmother after being neglected by her mother, Shizuka Tsuzaki, from infancy. This has resulted in a deeply strained and antagonistic relationship, with Aoba refusing to call her mother and addressing her coldly by her first name. Following her grandmother's death, Aoba is abducted by Ryohei Ogawara and brought to a secret organization called Angel in Venezuela, which is fighting against ancient, hostile Jinki. There, she discovers that her mother is one of the organization's supervisors, who cynically admits to bringing Aoba there to access an inheritance.

In terms of personality, Aoba is portrayed as a bright and positive girl, though her difficult childhood has left her lonely and starved for affection, which can lead to her crying easily or acting withdrawn. Despite this, she possesses a pure and merciful nature, holding a firm belief in justice and showing a strong reluctance to injure or kill others. She is also a hard worker, demonstrated when she undergoes rigorous physical training to become fit enough to pilot her Jinki. Her charismatic and determined nature has been noted as a central strength of her character, allowing her to carry much of the narrative.

Aoba's primary motivation throughout the story shifts from a general desire to help to a very personal goal. Initially afraid of combat, she grows more confident with experience. Her most powerful driving force becomes her desire to be reunited with Ryohei Ogawara, with whom she develops a romantic relationship. In the later part of the first arc, after a significant conflict, she and Ryohei confess their feelings for each other and become intimately involved. Following the main events in Venezuela, Aoba decides to stay behind to continue searching for her missing mother, Shizuka, while her allies return to Japan. During this time, she continues to fight against enemy forces in South America, becoming known and revered among the local resistance as the Black-Haired Valkyrie for her exceptional piloting skills.

Aoba's key relationships define much of her character arc. Her relationship with her mother, Shizuka, is the most significant source of conflict, evolving from mutual hatred to a complex and tragic reconciliation when she learns of the psychological manipulation and trauma that destroyed their family. Her bond with Ryohei Ogawara begins with her becoming his co-pilot after his original partner is injured. While their relationship is initially rocky, with Ryohei often acting as a crass older brother figure, it deepens into a strong romantic attachment. She also forms a rivalry with the younger but highly skilled pilot Rui Kousaka, who competes with her for the pilot seat of Moribito Type-02.

Over the course of the story, Aoba undergoes significant development. She transforms from a scared, untrained girl into a highly skilled and confident pilot. A notable milestone in her growth is mastering the Aerial Phantom, a super-fast movement technique that she can eventually execute without external equipment. Her latent talent as a blood relative makes her a natural at operating a Jinki, and her sensitivity is sharp enough to be almost supernatural, helping her locate hidden objects. In a climactic battle against the main antagonist, Kokusho, she awakens a new level of power, evolving her machine into the Moribito Type-02 Extend by staking her life and faith on her desire to protect others. Her piloting skills reach their peak in the following years, allowing her to freely use advanced techniques.
