Description
Don Patch, a central figure in the Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo series, is an orange, round creature with a series of spikes protruding from his back, giving him a somewhat star-like or porcupine-like appearance. His name is a pun on "donpachi," a Japanese onomatopoeia for machine gun fire, which is also the name of a brand of confectionery similar to Pop Rocks, explaining why he is called Poppa Rocks in some English adaptations. He originally served as the don, or leader, of a rebel group known as the Wiggin Gang, but he eventually quits this position, humorously claiming his followers never gave him enough personal space, to join the protagonist Bo-bobo on his journey.
True to the series' absurdist nature, Don Patch possesses a personality that is overwhelmingly happy-go-lucky and chaotic. His entire existence is dictated by the philosophy of hajike, or "wiggin out," which compels him to act in constantly bizarre and unpredictable ways to maintain his own stability. His cheerfulness is so profound that he often undercuts the seriousness of dangerous situations with nonsensical comments or actions that completely dismantle any dramatic tension. A deeply narcissistic attention-seeker, Don Patch is obsessed with being the center of focus. He frequently attempts to assert himself as the main character over Bo-bobo or the main heroine over the character Beauty, schemes often met with swift physical reprisal from his allies. His ego extends to a fierce but one-sided rivalry with his teammate Jelly Jiggler, whom he constantly tries to upstage. Despite these flaws, he demonstrates occasional flashes of matronly care, particularly toward his beloved toy doll named Ya-ya, and is fiercely protected by his former followers, the numerous Baby Patch who still view him as a father figure.
Don Patch's primary motivation is the relentless pursuit of attention and the pure enjoyment of his hajike lifestyle, which drives his role in the narrative as a chaotic wild card on Bo-bobo's team. His relationships are defined by this selfish yet oddly loyal nature. He bickers constantly with Bo-bobo and Jelly Jiggler, but ultimately fights alongside them as a crucial part of the group. A significant relationship is with the character Hanpen, for whom Don Patch develops a genuine friendship after Hanpen sacrifices himself to protect him, an event that triggers a profound transformation.
This transformation represents the most notable development in Don Patch's character. When pushed to a breaking point by extreme anger or despair, his usually jovial demeanor evaporates, and he becomes Don Patch, also known as Ikarin Patch, a serious and overwhelmingly powerful warrior. In this state, his body turns a deep yellow, his expression becomes focused and slanted, and he gains tremendous combat abilities that escalate with his rage. A further evolution, Dodon Patch, manifests during moments of even greater emotional crisis, such as when he believes his friend Bo-bobo has perished. This serious form is a stark contrast to his typical personality, hinting at hidden depths beneath his manic exterior.
In terms of abilities, Don Patch is remarkably versatile, with his powers often being as unpredictable as his personality. He frequently engages in frantic hand-to-hand combat and can extend the spikes on his body to strike nearby enemies. One of his signature techniques involves wielding a simple green onion as a powerful weapon, calling it the Don Patch Sword or Hammer. He possesses a potent rapid-punching attack known as the Shimitare Blues or Fist of Bruce Lee. His most versatile skill is his ability to transform his body into various objects, ranging from a shuriken to a boat. He can also fuse with Bo-bobo by turning into a piece of candy that the hero ingests, resulting in powerful fusion forms. All of these abilities are enhanced by his hajike skills, which focus on disorienting and confusing opponents with illogical gags and maneuvers rather than straightforward attacks.
