Description
Old Masato is the elderly, immortal form of Masato Yamanobe, the central character of the Future arc of the anime Phoenix, a story set in the year 3404. In his youth, Masato is a Class 2 space warrior serving Megalopolis Yamato, one of the underground city-states where the remnants of humanity live after the surface of the Earth has become a ruined wasteland. He is a straightforward and clean-cut young man, unambitious in matters of politics or power, whose chief wish is to live quietly with the woman he loves rather than to shape the fate of civilization.

That woman is Tamami, a shapeshifting alien from a species known as the Moopie, who appears in human form. Because sheltering such a creature is treated as a crime, Masato is ordered to kill Tamami, but he refuses and escapes with her instead. Fleeing across the deserted surface, the pair is guided by the Phoenix to the dome of Dr. Saruta, a scientist conducting research on artificial life and the revival of extinct creatures. While Masato and Tamami find refuge there, the underground cities of humanity destroy one another in a final war, wiping out the human race.

After this extinction, the Phoenix entrusts Masato with the future of the Earth and grants him an immortal body. Old Masato is therefore the last human left alive, a solitary figure who endures across vast stretches of time as the world slowly recovers and new forms of life appear. His role in the story is that of a reluctant witness and caretaker, a man who never sought greatness but is chosen to carry the memory of humanity and to oversee the rebirth of life on the planet.

In personality, Old Masato retains the gentle, passive, and deeply human qualities of his younger self, but those traits are strained by the immense loneliness of his situation. The immortality given to him is not a reward but a burden, and his development traces the change from a private young man who wanted only a simple life with the woman he loved into an aged survivor who must accept a responsibility far larger than himself.

His key relationships shape this journey. Tamami is the anchor of his emotional life, and his defiance of the authorities in order to protect her is what sets his fate in motion. Dr. Saruta provides him shelter and companionship during the final days of humanity, representing the last generation of the old world. The Phoenix is the guiding and judging presence in his life, choosing him to survive and setting the terms of his long vigil.

The most notable aspect of Old Masato is his immortality. Granted by the Phoenix, it allows him to live for billions of years, witnessing the slow cycle of life, death, and renewal as barren land gradually becomes home to new creatures. He possesses no special fighting ability or supernatural power beyond this enduring lifespan; his significance lies in what he observes and remembers rather than in what he does. Through his eyes, the story conveys its larger themes about the impermanence of civilizations and the persistence of life itself.
