Description
Michiru Kaiō serves as the civilian identity of Sailor Neptune, a guardian defending the Solar System. Her name, meaning "Rising Sea King," aligns with her planetary link to Neptune, the Roman sea god. Born March 6 under the Pisces sign with blood type O, she has teal hair and deep blue eyes, carrying herself with elegance and sophistication. Her civilian pursuits include playing her prized Stradivarius violin, the Marine Cathédrale, swimming, painting, and collecting cosmetics. She favors sashimi and marine blue, but dislikes kikurage mushrooms and sea cucumbers.

She initially attended the prestigious Mugen Academy for gifted students, partnering with Haruka Tenoh (Sailor Uranus) to monitor threats like the Death Busters and Hotaru Tomoe. After Mugen's destruction, she transferred to Minato-ku Juuban High School in the manga; her post-Mugen schooling in the anime is unspecified. She participates in her school's music and swimming clubs.

Michiru awakened independently as Sailor Neptune, gaining precognitive abilities manifesting as sensing "the sea is stormy" to warn of danger. Her oceanic manipulation powers are distinct from Sailor Mercury's freshwater abilities. She wields the Deep Aqua Mirror Talisman to reveal hidden truths, dispel illusions, and unleash attacks like Deep Submerge and Submarine Reflection. In the manga, she also performs the Submarine Violon Tide attack using her violin. Her transformation phrases are "Neptune Planet Power, Make Up!" and later "Neptune Crystal Power, Make Up!" after obtaining her Neptune Crystal from Sailor Saturn. Her guardian form evolves: the base uniform features teal and navy accents; Super Sailor Neptune adds a heart-shaped brooch and elongated ribbons; Eternal Sailor Neptune incorporates sea-green star motifs and knee-high boots.

Her closest bond is her romantic partnership with Haruka Tenoh, explicitly confirmed across all media as a lesbian relationship (though portrayed as cousins in the first English dub for censorship). They share a helicopter (named Kaiōmaru in the manga) and later reside with Setsuna Meiou (Sailor Pluto) and Hotaru Tomoe in a Victorian-style home, forming an adoptive family. Michiru refers to Hotaru as "Michiru-mama" in the manga.

During the Infinity arc, Michiru and Haruka prioritized their mission over personal connections, willing to sacrifice themselves or others to protect the Talismans. In the Stars arc, they feigned allegiance to Shadow Galactica, allowing Galaxia to control them to steal her Star Seed. This led to their deaths after killing Sailors Saturn and Pluto, though they were later revived. Facing death, Michiru expressed unwavering devotion to Haruka, stating she could endure hell as long as they were together.

In the Dream arc, she focused on raising Hotaru while balancing guardian duties. Her artistic passions remained central, with her dream being a renowned violinist career. In *Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Cosmos the Movie*, she fought in the final battle against Shadow Galactica in her Eternal Sailor Neptune form. Her character evolved from a mission-focused, sometimes ruthless guardian to a protective figure within her adoptive family, maintaining her elegance, strategic insight, and dedication to both Haruka and her artistic aspirations.
