Description
Paul Moriyama is a recurring supporting character in the anime Sgt. Frog, serving as the butler and full-time guardian of Momoka Nishizawa, the heiress of the Nishizawa family. His exact age is never stated, but he is portrayed as a man of advancing years, with gray hair, blue eyes, and a composed, refined bearing. According to flashbacks, he became Momoka's caretaker as the result of a duel with her father, Bayo Nishizawa, which determined his current position in the household.

His background before joining the Nishizawa family is only partly explained. He is a former soldier who has survived many battlefields, and his own remarks mention fighting on a southern front during wartime and enduring a prolonged standoff in the snow in the north. These experiences left him with extensive combat skill, though the details of his military career remain largely mysterious.

In daily life, Paul appears to be a gentle, courteous, and unflappable butler who always maintains a calm smile and speaks politely. He rarely raises his voice or shows strong emotion. Beneath this mild exterior, however, he is a highly capable and disciplined professional who can switch instantly to decisive action when a situation demands it, and he can be strict when circumstances call for discipline. His loyalty is directed above all toward Momoka, and his central motivation is to do everything in his power to make her happy and to protect her from harm.

His role in the story is that of Momoka's attendant and protector within the Nishizawa household. He frequently appears in episodes that involve Momoka's schemes to get closer to Fuyuki Hinata, carrying out her wishes with quiet efficiency and providing transport, security, and practical support. On occasion he takes a more active part in larger events, such as in the fourth theatrical film, where he joins the main cast in a red martial arts combat outfit and engages in battle against the opponent Pierre.

Paul's most notable relationship is with Momoka, whom he serves with unwavering devotion. His connection to her father, Bayo, is also significant, since their duel is what brought him into her service. Among the alien characters, he shares a friendly rivalry with Giroro, who is obsessed with testing himself against Paul as a fellow strong soldier. Paul's mere presence is enough to intimidate even skilled close combat fighters such as Tamama, a sign of the respect his abilities command.

In terms of development, Paul does not undergo a major personal arc. His character is fleshed out gradually through flashbacks and occasional combat appearances that reveal more about his military past and his fighting prowess. Comic episodes also place him in unusual situations, such as an incident in which he is fused with an electric toothbrush by a mechanization ray, showing a lighter side of his otherwise serious role.

Paul's notable abilities include superhuman martial arts and hand to hand combat, as well as practical familiarity with warfare. He is also skilled in piloting helicopters and handling firearms, and he possesses the awareness and reflexes of a seasoned soldier, allowing him to respond to threats quickly and protect those in his care.
