Description
Emi Akezawa is a character from the Baki the Grappler manga and anime series. She is the mother of the protagonist, Baki Hanma, and the former lover of the world's strongest creature, Yuujirou Hanma.

Before the events of the series, Emi came from a low-class background, with some implications that she previously worked as a prostitute. She was a shy and timid young woman when she met her future husband, the wealthy businessman Eiichi Akezawa, who introduced her to a world of luxury and violence. It was at a party celebrating their marriage that she first encountered Yuujirou Hanma. While watching an underground fight between a boxer and a martial artist, Emi became transfixed by Yuujirou, unable to look away. Yuujirou, noticing her stare and recognizing a hidden darkness within her, humiliated her husband by kissing her. Later that night, Yuujirou broke Eiichi's neck, revealing that Emi secretly possessed a sadistic streak and enjoyed witnessing brutality. He then took her as his own. Following her husband's murder, Emi lied to the police to protect Yuujirou and took control of the Akezawa Group, a powerful organization.

Emi's entire personality became defined by an all-consuming obsession with Yuujirou. She was a calm, eloquent, and competent leader in public, but she harbored a deep, frustrating, and constant excitement for the "Ogre" who fathered her child. This obsessive love completely overshadowed her role as a mother. She viewed her son, Baki, less as a child to be loved and more as a tool to win Yuujirou's approval. Her sole motivation was to raise Baki into a fighter strong enough to impress his father, believing that this was the only way she could secure a place in Yuujirou's life. She readily admitted that the maternal bond meant nothing to her and that Yuujirou was the only important thing in the world.

Throughout Baki's childhood, Emi financially supported his rigorous training, hiring the best coaches and keeping a close watch on his progress. However, when Baki was defeated by a gang of street thugs, she became distraught, fearing Yuujirou's displeasure. She began to lash out at her son, blaming him for his weakness and her own inability to satisfy his father. In a public display of her fractured psyche, she struck Baki, bit him, and cruelly asked why she had given birth to such a weak child. Despite this abuse, Baki still craved her affection, but she was incapable of giving it to him.

Her relationship with Yuujirou was equally one-sided. She constantly sought his attention and affection, but he viewed her with a combination of amusement and contempt, telling her that she was nothing if their son was not strong enough. Her key relationships, therefore, are defined by this toxic dynamic: a father who is an unreachable ideal and a son who is a neglected means to an end.

Emi's role in the story comes to a tragic head during the final battle between Baki and Yuujirou. Initially, she stood by Yuujirou's side, cheering him on and shouting for Baki to entertain his father. However, as she watched Yuujirou brutally and mercilessly pummel her son, something shifted within her. Seeing Baki's broken and beaten body awakened long-dormant maternal instincts. Overcome with love and remorse, she finally saw Baki as her son, not as a tool. In a desperate, suicidal act of defiance, Emi charged at Yuujirou to protect Baki. She punched him with all her might, shattering both her wrists, and defiantly spat in his face. In response, Yuujirou crushed her to death in a bear hug, breaking her back. In her final moments, she expressed regret for her years of cruelty and neglect, finally acknowledging Baki as her beloved child.

Emi Akezawa possesses no notable fighting abilities or martial arts training. Her power lies solely in her status as the head of the Akezawa financial empire, which she used to orchestrate dangerous situations for her son in the hopes of making him stronger. Her true strength, and ultimate tragedy, was the realization of her own failed motherhood, which she could only correct through a selfless act of sacrifice.
