TV-Series
Description
Chuck Thorndyke is the paternal grandfather of the series' central human character, Christopher Thorndyke. He is an elderly man, with gray hair and purple eyes, who works as a scientist and inventor. He resides in the Thorndyke family mansion, where he maintains a secret underground laboratory for his various projects. His age has been given as 55 in some sources, with other information placing him at 61, and he has a noted fondness for mechanics and baseball.

In terms of personality, Chuck is generally good-humored and witty, though he has a tendency to become eccentric or overly excited when faced with certain circumstances. Despite his occasional odd behavior, he is a wise individual who consistently uses his intelligence to solve problems and help those around him. He is well-meaning and dedicated to the well-being of his family and friends, always ready to offer his assistance when they are in need.

Chuck serves as a key supporting character within the story, primarily using his technical expertise to aid Sonic and his companions. His primary motivation is to protect and support the group, often by inventing and building the machines they require. He shares a particularly strong bond with Miles "Tails" Prower, as the two are united by their shared passion for inventing and mechanics. This friendship is a close and collaborative one; they regularly work together in Chuck's lab, and it is partially thanks to Chuck that the X Tornado, Tails' signature aircraft, was created. Their partnership extends to joining forces in battles against Dr. Eggman.

Chuck also plays a significant role as a grandfather to Chris, offering him guidance and support. His relationships with other residents of the Thorndyke household, such as the maid Ella, are similarly warm and familial.

Throughout the series, Chuck's role is largely consistent as a mentor and inventor. One notable moment of development occurs when he learns that Tails and the other Sonic characters must return to their own dimension. As a final act of support and a parting gift, Chuck modifies and enhances the X Tornado, ensuring his young friend has a superior machine for any future emergencies in his home world. This act underscores his growth from a collaborator into a selfless benefactor.

Chuck's most notable ability is his high level of technical aptitude and inventiveness. He is an expert in constructing machines and discovering new technologies, and his skills are considered a peer to those of Tails. He is capable of building and modifying advanced aircraft and other sophisticated devices, making him an invaluable asset in the group's efforts against Dr. Eggman.
