Description
Gouken is a martial arts master from Japan, known primarily as the master who trained Ryu and Ken. He is the elder brother of Akuma and was also a former student of Goutetsu, from whom both brothers learned their fighting style. This style, known as Ansatsuken, was originally a form of assassination martial art. After their master Goutetsu was killed by Akuma, Gouken chose to reform these techniques. He worked to remove the killing intent, known as the Satsui no Hado, from the moves, transforming them into a purely combative martial art focused on self-defense and spiritual growth. He then founded his own dojo to teach this refined path. Before training Ryu and Ken, Gouken briefly taught Dan Hibiki, but expelled him upon realizing that Dan was driven by a desire for revenge, a motivation Gouken rejected for leading to a dark path.

Gouken is portrayed as a man of great wisdom, humility, and deep insight. He does not boast about his immense power and instead offers thoughtful advice to others, suggesting that silence can lead to learning and that anger is a destructive guide. His personality is defined by his philosophy, which stands in direct opposition to that of his brother, Akuma. While Akuma believes that true martial arts mastery requires embracing all aspects of their art, including its lethal potential, Gouken teaches the value of discipline, respect for one's opponent, and the cultivation of a peaceful spirit. This philosophical divide is the central conflict of his life.

Gouken's role in the story is as a guiding, often absent, figure whose legacy profoundly shapes the journeys of his students, especially Ryu. For many years, it was believed that Gouken was killed by Akuma in a brutal confrontation. In the official backstory, Akuma challenged Gouken to a mortal battle and emerged victorious, seemingly using the Shun Goku Satsu, the Raging Demon, to end his brother's life. This event served as a catalyst for Ryu, who sought to avenge his master's death and also feared the dark power within himself. However, it was later revealed that Gouken had survived this attack. By completely emptying his soul of all emotion, he neutralized the Raging Demon's effect, though the effort left him in a deep, comatose state for an extended period. His students, finding him unconscious, believed him to be dead.

Key relationships define Gouken's character. His relationship with his brother Akuma is the most significant, a tragic bond of former training partners turned mortal ideological enemies. He detests what Akuma represents and the path of murder he has chosen. His relationship with Ryu is that of a father and a wise master. He found Ryu as an orphaned baby and raised him, dedicated to protecting him from the darkness of the Satsui no Hado. With Ken Masters, he acts as a strict but fair instructor, teaching the wealthy American humility and respect.

Gouken's character has developed over time, most notably through the retcon of his death. In Street Fighter IV, he was reintroduced as a living character who had reached a new level of mastery. Having survived his brother's attack, he achieved a state known as the Power of Nothingness, Mu no Ken. This technique represents the pinnacle of his philosophy and grants him power that even Akuma hesitates to confront. In this new role, he actively works to confront Ryu again, helping to suppress the Satsui no Hado within his star pupil and challenging Akuma directly for control over Ryu's fate.

In terms of abilities, Gouken is an exceptionally powerful martial artist, comparable to his brother Akuma. His fighting style is a unique evolution of Ansatsuken, stripping it of its lethal origins. His signature techniques include the Gō Hadōken, a powerful one-handed energy projectile he can fire at various angles. He can perform the Senkū Gōshōha, a rushing attack that allows him to phase through other projectiles. He also uses a vertical spinning kick called the Tatsumaki Gō Rasen. While he does not use the standard Shoryuken as a regular move, his most powerful techniques are the Kinjite Shōryūken and the Shin Shōryūken, devastating rising dragon punches reserved for his Super and Ultra Combos. In some iterations, he also commands the Denjin Hadōken, a lightning-infused fireball. His ultimate achievement is the defensive and spiritual technique of the Power of Nothingness, which allows him to survive otherwise fatal attacks and represents his complete mastery of the way of the void, symbolized by the kanji mu on the back of his gi.
