Dave Mallow
Description
Dave Mallow was an American voice actor whose career spanned over four decades, during which he became a familiar presence in English-language adaptations of anime and live-action television. He was born on October 19, 1948, and passed away on March 11, 2025, at the age of 76. A graduate of Drake University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater Arts in 1970, Mallow spent twelve years as a radio personality before relocating to Los Angeles in 1984 to focus on voice acting.
Mallow's voice acting credits are extensive, encompassing hundreds of roles in anime series, films, and video games. In anime, he provided voices for a wide array of characters across many genres. He was known for his work in series such as Bleach, where he voiced Kaien Shiba and Kensei Muguruma, and Digimon, where he was the voice of Angemon and several other characters. He also lent his voice to Commander Amarao in FLCL, Gotoh in Hunter x Hunter, and the narrator and Straizo in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Mallow's film work included roles in Blood: The Last Vampire and the 1989 Streamline Pictures dub of Castle in the Sky.
Mallow's work in the industry also included significant contributions as a director and writer for English adaptations. He served as an ADR director and script writer on numerous projects, including the Harmony Gold dub of Dragon Ball, The Adventures of Hutch the Honeybee, Tenchi in Tokyo, and Little Women, for which he also wrote the script. This behind-the-scenes work highlighted his deep involvement in the process of localizing anime for Western audiences. For his on-screen performance, he was nominated for Best Actor and Best Actor in a Comedy at the 1st Annual American Anime Awards in 2007.
Beyond traditional animation, Mallow was a prolific voice in the video game industry. He is particularly recognized for his portrayal of the formidable fighter Akuma in several installments of the Street Fighter video game series, including Street Fighter IV and Marvel vs. Capcom 3. His other notable video game credits include Ieyasu Tokugawa in the Samurai Warriors series, Lor'themar Theron in World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade, and additional voices in major titles like Diablo III and the Call of Duty franchise. Perhaps his most widely recognized role, however, was not in anime but as the voice of the bumbling Baboo in the live-action series Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a character he voiced for several years.
