Description
Akuma, known in Japan as Gouki, is a recurring character in the Street Fighter fighting game franchise. He first appeared as a secret character and optional final boss in Super Street Fighter II Turbo. In the series' narrative, Akuma is the younger brother of Gouken, who is the master of the series' primary protagonists, Ryu and Ken.

The background of Akuma is defined by his absolute and ruthless pursuit of martial arts mastery. He and his brother were students of Goutetsu, who taught them a deadly form of martial arts known as Ansatsuken. While Gouken rejected the most violent aspects of this style, Akuma embraced its lethal nature completely. He surrendered to the Satsui no Hado, a dark, murderous intent that grants immense power at the cost of one's humanity. This path led Akuma to kill his master Goutetsu in combat, taking his prayer beads as a trophy. He then challenged his brother Gouken to a fight, which he initially lost. Akuma returned years later and seemingly killed Gouken with his most feared technique, the Shun Goku Satsu, or Raging Demon, although it was later revealed that Gouken had survived the attack.

Akuma's personality is a direct reflection of his singular goal. He is a cold, emotionless, and incredibly focused warrior who lives only to perfect his fighting art and test it against worthy opponents. He has utter contempt for weakness and will not waste his time fighting those he deems inferior. He rarely smiles or shows any emotion beyond a burning intensity in combat. Despite his dark and murderous nature, he operates under a twisted form of honor; he seeks a fair fight to the death with a powerful opponent and has been known to spare those who are not at their peak, such as a terminally ill Gen, because killing them would bring him no satisfaction.

Within the overarching story, Akuma serves as a dark mirror and a recurring threat to the main characters, particularly Ryu. He is not a traditional villain seeking world domination, like M. Bison, but rather an antagonistic force driven by his own selfish code. His primary role is to goad Ryu into embracing the Satsui no Hado, sensing the same dark potential within the young fighter. He sees Ryu as a potential rival who could one day provide him with the ultimate challenge. His key relationships are defined by his philosophy. He despises his brother Gouken for rejecting the Satsui no Hado and forbidding its use. He holds a keen, predatory interest in Ryu. He has also clashed with other powerful fighters, such as the ancient hermit Oro and the underworld syndicate leader Gill, seeking to test his strength against theirs.

Akuma's character has seen subtle development over the course of the series. While he remains relentlessly focused on power, later installments have shown moments that suggest a minuscule degree of change. By the events of Street Fighter 6, he has come to respect Ryu as a worthy rival rather than merely a potential vessel for dark power. In a surprising contrast to his demonic persona, he is shown living a solitary life in a place called Enma's Hollow, passing the time by carving wood and even working occasionally as a fruit seller. This portrayal hints at a semblance of discipline and control, suggesting that he has found a way to coexist with the Satsui no Hado, unleashing its ferocity only when he chooses to battle.

Akuma is distinguished by his formidable and diverse set of abilities, all fueled by the Satsui no Hado. His physical appearance reflects this dark energy, with red hair, glowing red eyes, and tanned skin. He wears a dark gray karate gi that is often torn and frayed, a rope belt, and the large prayer beads of his slain master. The kanji for Heaven, Ten, is emblazoned on the back of his gi. His fighting style shares a base with Ryu and Ken but is more aggressive, powerful, and lethal. His special techniques include corrupted versions of their moves, such as the Gohadoken, a purple, more powerful Hadoken; the Goshoryuken, a variation of the Dragon Punch; and the Tatsumaku Zankukyaku, a hurricane kick that can strike multiple times. He can also teleport using the Ashura Senku and perform a diving attack called the Hyakkishu. His most notorious technique is the Shun Goku Satsu, or Raging Demon, a devastating super move where he dashes forward and, if he catches the opponent, subjects them to a flurry of unseen blows in complete darkness, ending with the kanji for Heaven burning into their back. Later games have introduced even more powerful forms, such as Shin Akuma and Oni, which represent him giving in more completely to the Satsui no Hado and unlocking even greater levels of destructive power.
