Description
Akuma, also known as Gouki in Japan, is a recurring character in the Street Fighter fighting game franchise, first appearing as a secret character in Super Street Fighter II Turbo. He is the younger brother of Gouken, the master of protagonists Ryu and Ken. Both brothers were students of Goutetsu, who taught them a deadly martial art called Ansatsuken. While Gouken rejected its most violent aspects, Akuma embraced its lethal nature, surrendering to the Satsui no Hado, a dark murderous intent that grants immense power at the cost of one’s humanity. Akuma killed his master Goutetsu in combat, taking his prayer beads as a trophy, and later seemingly killed Gouken with his feared technique, the Shun Goku Satsu, though Gouken survived.
Akuma is a cold, emotionless warrior who lives only to perfect his fighting art and test it against worthy opponents. He has contempt for weakness and operates under a twisted form of honor, seeking fair fights to the death with powerful foes while sparing those not at their peak. His primary role is as a dark mirror to Ryu, goading him into embracing the Satsui no Hado. In one instance, Akuma acts as an unseen antagonist, tormenting Ryu through telepathic communication during his desert isolation, urging him to accept the dark power and amplifying his inner conflict. This manipulation directly triggers Ryu’s temporary submission to the Satsui no Hado. Akuma’s moral code dictates that he avoids direct confrontation until his opponent is deemed ready or worthy.
Akuma has red hair, glowing red eyes, and tanned skin. He wears a dark gray karate gi that is often torn and frayed, a rope belt, and the large prayer beads of his slain master, with the kanji for Heaven (Ten) on the back of his gi. His fighting style is aggressive and lethal, including techniques such as the Gohadoken, Goshoryuken, and Tatsumaku Zankukyaku, as well as the devastating Shun Goku Satsu. Later installments show subtle development: by the events of Street Fighter 6, he has come to respect Ryu as a worthy rival and lives a solitary life in Enma’s Hollow, carving wood and occasionally working as a fruit seller, suggesting he has found a way to coexist with the Satsui no Hado.
