Description
Carozzo Ronah, better known by his fearsome alias Iron Mask, is the primary antagonist of the story. His background is rooted in tragedy and a desperate need to reclaim lost honor. Originally a brilliant and ambitious scientist, Carozzo married into the powerful Ronah family, becoming the husband of Nadia Ronah and father to their daughter, Berah. However, he was a fervent believer in the family's ideology of Cosmo Babylonia, a aristocratic society where an elite class would rule over those driven by emotion. His obsessive devotion to this cause, combined with the oppressive nature of the Ronah household, drove his wife Nadia to flee. She abandoned him, taking their young daughter and a servant named Theo Fairchild with her. This act of betrayal and the public shame of being cuckolded devastated Carozzo. Consumed by fury and grief, he turned his back on his former humanity. To erase his past weakness and gain the power to impose his will on the universe, he subjected himself to a series of extreme surgical operations to become an artificially enhanced Cyber Newtype. Sealing his face and his wounded emotions behind a permanent metal mask, he discarded his former identity and became known solely as Iron Mask.
The personality of Iron Mask is a complex mask of cold control hiding a seething core of self-loathing and rage. He presents himself as an emotionless, calculating, and ruthless commander, speaking and acting with an uncanny, chilling demeanor. He cultivates this persona to project an image of unassailable strength and resolve, promising never to remove his mask until he has successfully founded his new empire. Yet, beneath this iron facade, he is a deeply wounded and misogynistic individual. He is prone to wallowing in self-pity and publicly speaks of his "disgrace" and the "weakness" that led to his cuckolding, using this shame as the fuel for his crusading zeal. His rage is particularly directed at the women in his life; his treatment of his wife and daughter is possessive and controlling, viewing them less as family and more as property he has been wrongfully denied. He tolerates the presence of his wife's lover, Theo, only as a tool to locate his family, discarding him without hesitation once he has served his purpose.
Iron Mask's primary motivation is no longer simply the establishment of Cosmo Babylonia, but a far more apocalyptic and puritanical vision. He becomes a true believer in a twisted interpretation of his father-in-law's philosophy, arguing that humanity has squandered the Earth through chaos and overpopulation. To cure this, he devises a genocidal plan to "cull" the human population, intending to murder ninety percent of all people. His mission is to create a "quieter" world, purged of the supposedly weak masses, where only the strong elite remain. Within the story, he acts as the unseen, iron-fisted commander of the Crossbone Vanguard military forces, leading their invasion of the Frontier space colonies. While the public face of the movement is his father-in-law, Meitzer Ronah, Iron Mask is the true military and ideological extremist, secretly directing horrific operations even his nominal superior would not condone. His central role is as the ultimate threat, pushing the conflict from a political uprising to a desperate struggle for survival.
His key relationships are defined by betrayal and a lust for control. His relationship with his wife, Nadia Ronah, is the origin of his trauma; he drove her away with his fanaticism and now seeks to reclaim her as a trophy of his revenge. His relationship with his daughter, Berah Ronah, who is also known as Cecily Fairchild, is that of a possessive patriarch. He demands her return to the family to fulfill her role as a pawn in his empire, and when she defies him to join the protagonists, he responds with lethal fury, showing no paternal love, only a need to dominate or destroy. He is subordinate to Meitzer Ronah in name only, using the old leader's resources and influence to build his own power base while secretly plotting an even more radical course of action. He commands subordinates like the loyal Zabine Chareux, but keeps his most horrific secrets, such as the Bugs, hidden even from his inner circle to maintain deniability and control.
Throughout the narrative, Iron Mask's character development is one of escalating madness and dehumanization. Initially a cunning political and military leader, he progressively discards any pretense of sanity as his plans unfold. The unveiling of the Bugs, autonomous killing machines designed to massacre civilians, reveals the full, horrific extent of his nihilism. His fury grows as his plans are thwarted by his own daughter and the young pilot Seabook Arno. This rage ultimately consumes him, leading him to personally pilot a massive mobile armor into battle. In the final confrontation, his enhanced mental powers, which allow him to control dozens of remote weapons simultaneously, are unable to process the overwhelming sensory information generated by the Gundam F91's advanced "Metal Peel-off Effect." Blinded by his own rage and the technological marvel before him, he inadvertently destroys his own machine, becoming a victim of his own obsessive hatred.
As a result of his transformation into a Cyber Newtype, Carozzo Ronah possesses several notable and terrifying abilities. He exhibits superhuman strength, capable of tearing open the cockpit door of a mobile suit with his bare hands and surviving in the vacuum of space without a standard suit. His fortified mask is strong enough to deflect gunfire. He also demonstrates potent mental powers, which may include the ability to kill a person through sheer force of will, though this is speculated. Most notably, his mask and neural enhancements allow him to interface directly with a Psycommu system, enabling him to pilot the gigantic XMA-01 Rafflesia mobile armor and mentally control its numerous complex weapons, including 125 articulated tentacle rods, without the need for physical controls. This technological symbiosis makes him a devastatingly effective combatant, though ultimately his human flaws—his rage and inability to adapt to the unexpected—prove to be his undoing.
