TV-Series
Description
Calypso is introduced in the series as the queen of a crystalline planet. Her most immediately striking feature is her distinctive appearance, particularly her tall, funky crystal hairdo, which is not merely decorative but also interacts with her emotional state, notably glowing or changing when she experiences strong feelings such as love.

Her background is that of a ruler whose world is under direct threat from the gods. When her planet is attacked by the Tridents, the agents of the gods, she sends a distress call to Ulysses and his crew aboard the Odyssey. However, her motivations are initially conflicted. She is secretly taking orders from Zeus, the king of the gods, and is tasked with luring Ulysses into a trap to get rid of him and his crew. Her primary motivation is survival and the protection of her own crystalline world, which the gods threaten to destroy if she does not obey them.

The role Calypso plays in the story is that of a tragic and complex figure. She tricks Ulysses into repairing her planet's fractured crystal sun by offering him the route back to Earth as bait. However, her feelings change when Ulysses saves her life during the dangerous repair process. She falls deeply in love with him, which puts her in direct conflict with her orders from Zeus. Her key relationship is therefore with Ulysses, whom she loves but is also duty-bound to destroy. This internal conflict drives the narrative of her episode.

Calypso undergoes a significant development. She moves from being a tool of the gods, attempting to imprison and later kill Ulysses, to defying Zeus to save him. When she attempts to carry out her orders, Ulysses refuses to fight back, and she is unable to harm him, instead embracing him. For her defiance, Zeus punishes her by sending crystal birds to attack Ulysses. In her final act, she saves Ulysses by defending him against these magical creatures, sacrificing her own life in the process. Her fate leaves Ulysses in deep sadness as her planet disappears.

Notably, her abilities include the aforementioned crystal hair that responds to her emotions, and she commands a certain level of authority over her crystalline world and its properties. She is ultimately a tragic queen whose love leads to her redemption and demise.
