Description
Griff, whose full name is Griffon Kato, is a small, blue, gelatinous creature with an oval body and a somewhat comical face featuring entirely black eyes, a long nose, and thick lips. He has thin arms with three-fingered hands and uses multiple tentacles as legs, standing approximately eighteen inches tall. He is often seen riding a strange horse-like creature named Tanchimo, which moves its head in a rapid, side-to-side motion. As a sentinoid, his body is highly malleable, allowing him to change his shape, float in the air while sleeping, and speak gibberish.

His background reveals that he was originally the leader of a small island that was embroiled in a war with the Pudding Head army. The conflict took a turn when the dog-like creature Plue arrived and, through an act of great courage, saved the island, leading its inhabitants to believe Plue had sacrificed himself. From that day onward, the islanders, including Griff, revered Plue with the honorific sama. Months later, Griff left his island to work as a horse and carriage chief, a job through which he met the series' protagonist, Haru Glory, and his companion Elie, becoming an early traveling companion in their quest.

Griff primarily serves as the group's cartographer and navigator, using his skills to guide them on their journey. However, his most prominent role is that of comic relief, as his exaggerated reactions, off-the-wall comments, and constant rivalry with Plue for Elie's attention set a humorous tone. One of his defining traits is his perverted nature, as he consistently expresses a desire to embrace young women, especially Elie, with a particular focus on touching their chests. He frequently spies on her while she bathes, steals her underwear, and hides in her clothing, often excusing his behavior with flimsy justifications. He also has a notable love of mayonnaise and hates pudding with a passion.

Despite these lecherous tendencies, Griff demonstrates a genuine care for his teammates. In a serious moment during the Symphonia arc, when Elie is about to be struck by an enemy's sword, Griff jumps in front of her and is cut in half, an act of bravery that underscores his loyalty despite his complete lack of combat skills. He also spends time creating maps and devising plans to help the group, even if his suggestions often lean toward the absurd, such as proposing that Elie distract an enemy with her body.

His key relationships are primarily with the main cast. He holds Plue in the highest regard, calling him Master Plue due to the events on his island, though he is also clearly jealous of the affection Elie shows the creature. His relationship with Elie is a complex mix of obsessive infatuation and genuine protectiveness, often crossing into inappropriate territory but ultimately rooted in a desire to be close to her. He interacts with Haru and the other Rave Warriors like Musica as a helpful, if often annoying, ally who aids in missions by performing non-combat tasks such as crawling through air vents or serving as a life raft.

In terms of abilities, Griff has almost no combat skills. His primary power is his shape-shifting ability, which he uses to contort his body into strange or flat forms, inflate portions of himself, and elongate his limbs. This is often used to distract opponents or squeeze through tight spaces. His unique physiology also allows him to survive being split in two, though he will die if the two halves are not rejoined within six and a half hours. When separated, the two halves are known as Griffon Ka and Griffon To, and they can eventually reform back into one body. Throughout the story, he shows little to no development in power, remaining a non-fighter whose value comes from his navigation, his comedic presence, and his unwavering, if bizarre, loyalty to his friends.
