Description
Judy Abbott is the protagonist of the 1990 Japanese anime series. She is a cheerful and intelligent girl who grew up as an orphan at the John Grier Home in New York City, having been found on Bayson Avenue as a baby. Her time in the orphanage was marked by hardship and a strict environment, which included an incident where she was tied to a tree as punishment for an escape attempt. Despite these challenges, she developed a notable talent for writing, and it is one of her essays that catches the attention of a mysterious wealthy trustee.

This anonymous benefactor, whom she knows only as John Smith, offers to sponsor her education at the prestigious Lincoln Memorial High School. The only condition is that she must write him monthly letters about her progress, with no expectation of a reply. Having once glimpsed only his elongated shadow, she affectionately nicknames him Daddy Long Legs and comes to consider him the only family she has, growing deeply attached to him.

In terms of personality, Judy is lively, honest, and spirited, though she can also be impulsive and clumsy at times. She loves to talk and tell stories. However, she also harbors a considerable inferiority complex about being an orphan, which causes her great suffering as she feels unable to confide this truth to anyone and fears being judged. This internal struggle is a core part of her character, as she often worries that her background makes her unworthy of her good fortune.

Her primary motivation is a fierce desire for independence and to prove her own worth. As she progresses through her three years of high school, she becomes determined to stand on her own, which sometimes leads her to argue with her benefactor or disobey his wishes, such as by taking jobs he advises against. She is not content to simply accept charity and actively seeks to earn her own way, eventually dreaming of repaying her benefactor with the money she earns from her writing.

Judy's role in the story is that of a young woman navigating a completely new world of freedom, education, and social challenges. At Lincoln Memorial, she forms key relationships with her two roommates. Sallie McBride is a kind and supportive friend who remains close to Judy throughout the series. Julia Pendleton initially comes across as a snobby rich girl, leading to a contentious relationship with Judy, but Julia eventually receives significant character development and the two grow into mutual respect and friendship. Through Julia, Judy meets her cousin, Jervis Pendleton, a kind and goofy young man who is not like other wealthy people. Judy falls in love with him, though she struggles with revealing her orphan past to him.

Throughout the anime, Judy develops significantly. She matures from a self-conscious orphan with deep-seated insecurities into a more confident and independent young woman. A major part of her growth involves balancing her gratitude toward her mysterious benefactor with her need for autonomy. The story concludes with her emotional journey to discover that Jervis Pendleton and her benefactor, Daddy Long Legs, are the same person, a revelation that helps her overcome her feelings of unworthiness. Her notable abilities include a strong talent for writing and storytelling, which is the very skill that changes her life.
