Description
Katsumi Akagi is the childhood friend and neighbor of the protagonist, Ryo Takatsuki, and their lives have been intertwined since a formative moment in their youth when Ryo comforted her after the death of a beloved cat. On the surface, she presents as a kind and compassionate young woman, but beneath this gentle exterior lies a remarkably strong will. She is forthright and not afraid to voice her opinions, especially when she believes someone is acting foolishly. This combination of warmth and inner strength makes her a grounding presence for Ryo, who she secretly loves, as she consistently tries to keep him calm and stable after the activation of his ARMS.
Her role in the story extends far beyond that of a supportive friend. Unbeknownst to her for much of her life, Katsumi is deeply entangled in the machinations of the secret organization Egrigori. She is one of the original ARMS-compatible embryos, a fact that explains her striking physical resemblance to another ARMS wielder, Kei Kuruma, as they were engineered from similar genetic templates. For reasons that remain unclear, she was not initially given an ARMS implant, yet she was destined to play a vital part in the organization's master plan. Her significance to Egrigori becomes apparent when she is taken prisoner, an ordeal which tests her resolve, though she never loses faith that Ryo will come to rescue her.
The narrative takes a tragic turn when she is apparently killed during a confrontation. The antagonist Keith White uses another character's ability to manipulate space-time, pulling Katsumi directly into the path of one of Ryo's attacks. Absorbed by the entity known as Alice, she is later seen alive when this form is defeated. In a brief, poignant moment, she offers a hand to the crumbling Black Alice, and this contact results in an ARMS core being implanted within her own body. This event marks a dramatic shift in her character, as the growing power of this new ARMS begins to manifest in grisly nightmares and increasingly unstable behavior, which ultimately culminates in a violent and lethal outburst against a group of attackers.
Her latent abilities finally awaken fully in the form of an ARMS unit known as Bandersnatch. This power positions her as a direct counterpart and nemesis to Ryo's own ARMS. At its full potential, Bandersnatch allows Katsumi to transform into a snow-white copy of the creature Jabberwock. While Ryo’s ability is associated with fire and anti-matter production, hers is fundamentally opposed, granting her immense cryokinetic power. She can generate ice, instantaneously create blizzard conditions, and freeze an area as large as a town to absolute zero with a mere thought. This transformation adds a complex layer to her character, forcing her to confront her own inner demons and newfound capacity for destruction. Despite the chaos surrounding her, her core relationships remain a driving force, most notably the unwavering bond with Ryo, which continues to define her journey. Following the resolution of the conflict with Alice, Katsumi and Ryo marry, and her legacy is carried on by their daughter.
