Description
Haruko Maeda is a supporting character in the anime Bunny Drop, primarily known for being the cousin of the protagonist, Daikichi Kawachi. She is a woman with brown hair and brown eyes, and she is the mother of a young, energetic daughter named Reina. Haruko makes an important decision early in the story, as she is one of the relatives considered as a potential guardian for the young girl Rin after the family patriarch’s death. While she is an experienced parent, it is ultimately Daikichi who decides to take on the responsibility.

As a mother, Haruko is portrayed as organized, intelligent, and knowledgeable about the practical aspects of running a household and raising a child. She is frequently called upon by Daikichi for parenting advice, acting as a mentor figure of sorts for the inexperienced single father. In the early episodes, she represents the idea of a stable, conventional parent, in contrast to Daikichi’s more hands-on and emotionally intuitive style.

However, Haruko’s character gains significant depth beyond the role of just a capable mother. A major story arc reveals that she is deeply unhappy in her own domestic life. She feels alienated from her husband, who is rarely home, and struggles under the pressure of living with her in-laws, whom she considers overbearing. This internal conflict reaches a peak when Haruko makes the impulsive decision to run away from home with her daughter, Reina, and seeks refuge at Daikichi’s apartment. This event allows the narrative to explore her personal struggles in detail. During her stay, she openly discusses her feelings of loneliness and frustration with Daikichi, confessing that her husband no longer seems to look at her and that she feels she has been bottling up her feelings ever since marrying.

Despite the heartfelt and serious nature of her confession, Haruko displays a notable resilience. While she acknowledges her difficult situation, she ultimately decides to return to her family. Her decision is a pragmatic, if melancholy, one driven by her sense of duty as a mother and her belief that she can endure the hardship for the sake of her daughter, Reina. This pivotal moment highlights a key aspect of her personality: a quiet strength and a willingness to sacrifice her own happiness for her child. Daikichi reflects on this strength, remembering that she was a crybaby when they were children and marveling at the strong woman she has become.

Haruko’s primary relationships are with her cousin Daikichi and her daughter Reina. Her bond with Daikichi is the most explored in the story; he serves as a confidant during her personal crisis and a sounding board for his own parenting challenges. Her relationship with her husband is strained and mostly depicted through her own emotional accounts of feeling invisible and unsupported. Her development throughout the series shows a transition from a character defined by her capability and conformity to one who is more deeply humanized, struggling with the frustrations of marriage and the pressure to maintain appearances for the sake of her family. She ultimately embodies the complex reality of an adult caught between personal desires and family obligations. As a supporting character, her notable abilities lie not in physical prowess but in her domestic competence, her emotional resilience, and her role as a source of practical wisdom and a mirror for the series’ themes regarding the realities of adulthood and parenthood.
