Description
Aki Kuga is a central figure whose actions drive much of the conflict. He is a young man of around twenty years of age, recognized by his silver hair and a demeanor that is often cold, blunt, and unsettling. As a childhood friend of Kyohei Kuga, he shares a deep and complicated history rooted in their isolated hometown. Aki is a Seki, an individual with the ability to control a kakashi, a powerful mechanical entity treated as a god. His partner kakashi is named Kuramitsuha.

Born as a child of a concubine within the Kuga family, Aki’s early life was marked by hardship. He lost his parents at a young age and was raised by the family's head wife, Kimie, where he endured mistreatment, particularly from his half-brother, Atsushi. His life changed when Kyohei reached out to him, suggesting that he could become the Seki for Kuramitsuha. This act gave Aki a sense of purpose, as he was chosen by the kakashi instead of Atsushi. However, his life deteriorated after a tragic incident. His beloved dog, Nono, was killed on Atsushi's orders, and a woman he was close to, Chihaya Seno, was assaulted and killed. In a rage, Aki used Kuramitsuha to slaughter Atsushi and many other members of the Kuga shrine clan. Following this massacre, he was imprisoned in a shrine for six years.

Aki’s personality is complex, blending a dangerous, antisocial nature with remnants of his former humanity. He initially appears as a cruel and belligerent psychopath, displaying a twisted smile and a willingness to kill without hesitation. He is highly intelligent and manipulative, capable of strategizing during battles and deducing his opponents' methods. Despite his cold exterior, he is shown to have cared deeply for Nono and Chihaya, and he was once able to smile brightly in the presence of Kyohei and Nono. His time in isolation has left him with very low social skills and an inability to function normally in society, which he is vaguely aware of and attempts to correct, such as learning to use a convenience store or the internet.

His primary motivation is his obsession with Kyohei. After learning that Kyohei had left their village to live a normal life in Tokyo, Aki escaped his confinement to confront him. He believes that he and Kyohei share the same inherent darkness and the same "sin" from the massacre, and he cannot tolerate Kyohei pretending to be innocent or moving on from the past. Much of his antagonistic behavior is a calculated effort to goad Kyohei, to strip away his calm facade, and force him to acknowledge the violent nature they both possess. He seeks to drag Kyohei back into the world of the kakashi and prove that his friend is no different from himself.

Within the story, Aki serves as a primary antagonist and a dark mirror to the protagonist, Kyohei. His escape from the village sets the main plot in motion, forcing Kyohei to confront the past he tried to leave behind. He is pursued by other Seki, including Utao Kuga and Koushiro, who are sent to recapture him. For a time, he hides in the apartment of Kuuko Karahari, an eccentric woman who is fascinated by the kakashi. Their relationship is one of mutual use, with Kuuko providing shelter and Aki providing her with information.

His key relationships are fraught with tension and tragedy. His bond with Kyohei is the most significant, moving from friendship to a bitter, obsessive enmity. His interactions with Kyohei's younger sister, Utao, are primarily antagonistic, as she acts as an obstacle to his goals. His connection to the past, to Chihaya Seno and his dog Nono, represents the humanity he lost and fuels his rage. Though he is technically a member of the Kuga family, his status as a concubine's child and his subsequent actions have made him an outcast.

Aki shows signs of psychological development as the story progresses. While he begins as an almost pure agent of chaos, glimpses into his past reveal the trauma that shaped him. He demonstrates a capacity for calmness and introspection, notably during a quiet encounter with Hibino in a library. He also shows a very limited capacity for change, such as his willingness to learn about modern life, suggesting a small degree of self-awareness about his own damaged state. His fate is ultimately tragic, as his obsession and inability to move past his trauma lead to his death.

As a Seki, Aki is a formidable combatant. He possesses the ability to telepathically control Kuramitsuha, which is armed with powerful blades and a flexible, tentacle-like tail that can be used to ensnare opponents. He has demonstrated advanced techniques, such as summoning only part of his kakashi, like a blade, and even keeping it invisible. He can also use the summoning process for quick teleportation. Physically, he is an athletic human, but his true power lies in his manipulation of his kakashi and his sharp, strategic mind.
