Description
Mei-Mei is a recurring character from the anime Beyblade: Metal Masters, where she appears as a Blader training at the Beylin Temple in China. She holds the position of the official substitute member for Team Wang Hu Zhong, the team representing China in the World Championships. At first glance, her appearance can be misleading to opponents. She is a short girl with pale skin, large purple eyes, and teal hair styled into distinctive ox horns or odango buns, similar to her teammate Chi-Yun. Her signature outfit is a reddish-pink Chinese dress, or cheongsam, with yellow trim and pink heart-shaped buttons. She completes this look with navy blue leggings, a white belt with a crest, white fingerless gloves, a green armband, and dark blue boots, presenting a traditional yet battle-ready appearance.
In terms of personality, Mei-Mei is generally calm and serious, often appearing reserved or even anti-social due to her quiet nature. She is an honorable individual who respects everyone she meets and remains fiercely loyal to her teammates and the Beylin Temple. A particularly endearing trait is her tendency to mix up common phrases and speak using incorrect words, a quirk that her fellow team member Chao Xin frequently corrects and ridicules. This can make her seem clumsy or absent-minded, but it does not reflect her abilities as a Blader. Despite her quiet demeanor, she is quick to defend others, as shown when she confronted a group of thieves who had stolen Beyblades from local children.
Mei-Mei has trained at the Beylin Temple for a long time alongside her teammates Dashan Wang and Chi-Yun Li. She was originally slated to be a main competitor in the selection matches for the World Championships, but she was defeated by the arrogant Blader Chao Xin, which forced her into the role of the team's substitute. Her primary motivation throughout the series is to uphold the honor of the Beylin Temple while supporting her team in creating a new legacy distinct from their predecessors. She journeys to Japan with Chi-Yun to scout the competition, where they engage in a tag-team battle against Gingka Hagane and Masamune Kadoya. Although the Chinese team loses that match due to Mei-Mei being knocked out of the ring, she wishes her opponents luck and warns them about the upcoming World Championships.
As the story progresses, Mei-Mei's role shifts from a reserve member to an active combatant. She and Chi-Yun later face Tsubasa Otori and Yu Tendo in a training match that ends in a tie, helping their rivals from GanGan Galaxy learn teamwork. She gets her major chance to compete in the tournament during the Wild Card round against the European team Excalibur. Tag-teaming with Chao Xin, she battles the Twin Jewels, Sophie and Wales. Initially, the pair demonstrates perfect sync and nearly overpowers their opponents, but Sophie and Wales eventually show their true strength and secure an easy victory. Mei-Mei also participates in the Gateway to Success tag-team tournament in Metal Fury, where she partners with Chao Xin against Gingka and Yuki Mizusawa, though they ultimately lose the match.
Regarding her key relationships, Mei-Mei is deeply loyal to the entire Wang Hu Zhong team, treating Chi-Yun with a high degree of respect. Her dynamic with Chao Xin is particularly notable; while he often mocks her for her verbal mistakes, they fight effectively as a tag-team when working together. Throughout the Metal Saga, Mei-Mei does not undergo a dramatic personality overhaul but rather matures as a Blader. She gains confidence in her role as a substitute and becomes more capable of holding her own against high-level international competition, demonstrating that she is more than just a reserve player.
In battle, Mei-Mei wields the Beyblade Aquario 105F, a Pre-HWS (Hybrid Wheel System) Beyblade that relies on fierce and swift attacks to overpower opponents. Her fighting style is aggressive, utilizing a variety of special moves. She uses Ferocious Tiger Waltz, where Aquario spirals with a blue aura to slam into the opponent; Soaring Firebird, which strikes at great speed and gathers energy for impact; Fighting Snake Flash, a head-on slithering attack; and Big Wave, which creates a large wave to destabilize the opponent's Beyblade. In the video game adaptions, she uses Hyper Aquario 105F, Storm Aquario 105F, or Clay Aquario 105F depending on the title. Despite her small stature and quiet personality, Mei-Mei remains a formidable Blader whose skills embody the long history and discipline of the Beylin Temple.
