Description
Aya Oono is a first-year student at Ooarai Girls Academy and serves as the gunner of the 37mm cannon for Rabbit Team, operating the secondary turret of the team's M3 Lee tank. Standing at 150 centimeters tall, she has a distinctive appearance characterized by long, light blonde hair styled into twin ponytails and a pair of wide, round glasses that have become her trademark. Her birthday is June 15, her blood type is B, and she was born in Kasama City in Ibaraki Prefecture.

In terms of personality, Aya is known for being an endlessly energetic and bright mood setter among her fellow first-year students. She possesses a relentlessly cheerful disposition and often takes on the role of the team's comedian, though her enthusiasm sometimes manifests as a somewhat rough or impulsive demeanor. This impulsiveness is particularly evident in her role as a gunner, as she has a strong tendency to fire at any available target without waiting for orders or fully assessing the threat. Her catchphrase, "I'll kill you," reflects this aggressive and spirited approach to combat. Despite her sometimes hasty actions, Aya has demonstrated a level-headed side in critical moments, such as during the match against Kuromorimine where she and another teammate silently agreed to prioritize the match outcome over their own safety when others were panicking.

Aya has a strong fondness for her mobile phone and the internet, where she uses the handle "ayaya" to gather information. Before sensha-do became a mandatory subject, she was very interested in ninjutsu, particularly the idea of using shurikens. Her hobbies include collecting oddly shaped or funny cell phone straps, and one of these straps even served as the inspiration for Rabbit Team's emblem. Her favorite tank is the French Hotchkiss H35 light tank, and her favorite flower is the pansy.

Aya's role in the story centers on her membership in Rabbit Team, which is composed entirely of first-year students who are beginners in tank operation. Early on, she posted a question on a knowledge search site asking how to drive a tank, only to receive unhelpful or mocking responses before eventually getting proper guidance. Throughout the series, she participates in all of Ooarai's major matches, including battles against Pravda, Kuromorimine, Anzio, and the university selection team in the movie. In the manga adaptation of the Anzio battle, she briefly serves as the driver and 75mm gunner for a Renault B1bis tank, demonstrating her adaptability across different roles.

A notable running gag in the series involves the repeated destruction of Aya's glasses during combat. Starting from the semifinal match against Pravda, her glasses break almost every time her tank is knocked out of a battle. This occurs so consistently that in the movie, when her tank is eliminated by a Centurion, her glasses are shattered, leaving her unable to clearly see the end of the match. The theatrical version of the final chapter against Continuation shows her quickly switching to a spare pair after another such incident. Some supplementary materials suggest that she may sometimes pretend to have broken glasses, possibly carrying a spare cracked pair for this purpose. Aya stubbornly prefers glass lenses despite their fragility, and the cost of replacing them comes out of her own pocket, creating financial strain.

Aya maintains several key relationships within the story. She is close with her fellow Rabbit Team members, particularly Azusa Sawa the team leader, as well as Yukari Akiyama and Saki Maruyama. She has frequent interactions with Yukari, who often involves her in unconventional plans and schemes. Aya also collaborated with Saori Takebe on creating the "Rabbit Dance" as a counterpart to the famous "Anko Dance". Outside of the team, she is known to have many male friends, though she sometimes struggles to maintain these friendships because her enthusiasm for tanks and sensha-do can put them off.

In terms of development, Aya grows from a completely inexperienced beginner into a more competent and occasionally reliable crew member. While her impulsive nature remains, she learns to work more effectively within her team, as shown when she helps coordinate fire against an enemy Semovente under Azusa's leadership. Her ability to remain calm and make tactical decisions under pressure, as seen in the Kuromorimine match, suggests a maturity that emerges when the situation demands it. Despite the recurring joke about her glasses breaking, this trait has become so closely associated with her that it serves as a recognizable character signature throughout the franchise's various installments.
