Description
Mao is a supporting character in Jormungand Perfect Order. He was originally an artillery officer in the Japan Self-Defense Forces, serving as part of their artillery corps. His military career came to an abrupt end after a deadly training accident during which several soldiers under his command were killed. Mao was held responsible for the incident and was subsequently discharged from the military. Shortly after his dismissal, he was approached and recruited by Koko Hekmatyar to join her private security squad.

Mao is characterized by a straightforward and pragmatic demeanor. Unlike many of his more eccentric or hardened colleagues, he does not come from a background of active combat experience. This sets him apart within the squad, as he is one of the few members who has never engaged in live battlefield operations. He regards his work as a bodyguard primarily as a means to provide for his family, making him distinct among Koko's team as the only member who is married with children. He has a wife, a son, and a daughter, though he has kept from them the fact that he lost his military position.

Within the story, Mao serves as a capable member of Koko's security detail, though his contributions are less focused on direct infantry engagements and more on specialized support. His most notable ability is his expertise in artillery, which proves highly valuable during certain missions. He demonstrates the capacity to operate and accurately fire heavy weapons, including the ability to strike targets using a 122mm cannon from a moving aircraft. Beyond combat, Mao takes on an educational role within the group: he is assigned the responsibility of tutoring Jonah, the youngest member of the squad, in science lessons, including physics and chemistry.

Mao's key relationships include his bond with his family, who remain an important motivation for him, and his connection with Jonah, whom he instructs in academic subjects. He interacts regularly with the other members of Koko's squad, including Lehm, Valmet, and Wilee, though his comparatively ordinary background as a non-combat veteran gives him a unique position within the team. Throughout the events of Jormungand Perfect Order, Mao continues to fulfill his duties as a bodyguard and artillery specialist, contributing to the squad's operations while maintaining his role as an informal educator for Jonah. His development as a character remains tied to his dual identity as both a former military officer adapting to private security work and a family man navigating the morally complex world of arms dealing.
