Description
Dumon, known as Durbe in the original Japanese version, is a central antagonist and a member of the Seven Barian Emperors in the second half of the Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL series. His name is derived from Dubhe, a star in the Big Dipper constellation, and he is also known by the epithet "The Barian's White Shield".
In his true Barian form, Dumon has wisteria-colored skin, short gray hair, and grey eyes. He wears silver armor with blue gems and a grey cloak, typical of his kind. While on Earth, he adopts the appearance of a bespectacled young man with spiky gray hair, dressed in a black vest over a white shirt, black pants, and a scarf. On one occasion, separated from his powers, he uses the alias "Nasch" in his human form.
Personality-wise, Dumon is distinguished as the most level-headed and composed of the Barian Emperors. Following the disappearance of the original leaders Nasch and Marin, he assumes command of the remaining five emperors, acting as a tactical and strategic leader who directs the Barian invasion of Earth. He demonstrates a deep loyalty and care for his fellow Barians, often expressing his faith in them before sending them on missions. While he generally dislikes internal conflict and mediates disputes, he is not afraid to intimidate others, such as Alit, with a stern tone to ensure compliance. Despite being an antagonist, he is capable of acknowledging and praising the skills of his enemies, as seen during his duel with Reginald "Shark" Kastle, where he compliments Shark's determination and dueling ability, noting that Shark's soul reminds him of someone from his past. This connection hints at his underlying motivations.
Dumon's primary motivation is the protection and salvation of the Barian World. To achieve this, he orchestrates the Barian Emperors' efforts to collect the "Numbers" cards and defeat Yuma Tsukumo and Astral. His role in the story is predominantly that of a leader and commander, especially in the first half of the series, where he is regarded as the central antagonist. He rarely fights himself, preferring to send subordinates like Gilag, Alit, and Mizael to duel on his behalf. His most significant duel is against Reginald Kastle (Shark) on the D.D. Ancient Battlefield - Sargasso. The duel remains unfinished after the field spell self-destructs.
One of the most critical relationships in Dumon's narrative is with Nasch, the original leader of the Barian Emperors who disappeared. Dumon was deeply loyal to Nasch, and his desire to find him often conflicts with his duty to collect the Legendary Numbers. This relationship is rooted in their past lives. In ancient times, Dumon was a legendary knight and a close friend of Nasch, who was a king. He fought alongside Nasch against the evil forces of Vector. In his own tragic backstory, Dumon was betrayed and killed by his corrupt fellow knights while trying to reason with them, perishing alongside his beloved pegasus, Mach. He was later reincarnated as a Barian with no memory of this previous life. This past life strongly influences his reincarnated self, as he feels an inexplicable familiarity with legends of a heroic knight and his horse.
Dumon undergoes significant development, primarily through the gradual awakening of his past memories. Initially presented as a standard antagonist, his character deepens as he helps Shark survive a collapsing temple. When their hands touch, it triggers a reaction that restores Dumon's powers and memories, revealing his true identity and cementing their past connection. His loyalty eventually leads him to sacrifice himself while trying to protect Marin from Vector, resulting in him being absorbed. In the series' conclusion, after Yuma defeats Astral, the power of the Numeron Code revives Dumon along with the other Barian Emperors, and he is ultimately restored to his original human form.
In terms of abilities, Dumon, like his fellow Barian Emperors, can create portals for teleportation and generate energy spheres for flight. He is noted as one of the few Barians capable of maintaining his true form while on Earth, unless his Baria Lapis (the crystal on his wrist) is damaged. As a duelist, he commands a Star Seraph deck, which focuses on the Light-attribute天使族. His signature card is Number 102: Star Seraph Sentry (known as Holy Lightning - Glorious Halo in Japanese). During the Barian invasion of Earth, he gains the ability to perform a Chaos Draw, allowing him to use Rank-Up-Magic - The Seventh One to evolve his monster into Number C102: Archfiend Seraph. He also displays the unusual habit of holding his cards in his palm rather than with his fingers.
