Based on Fujio Akatsuka's *Osomatsu-kun* manga, Chibita began as a nameless bullied child before becoming a named central character. His background frequently shifts, depicting him with rotating family members or as an orphan, often living in a scrapyard pipe during childhood. As a child, he stands 60cm tall with a bald head featuring a crease and a single protruding hair, wide eyes, a pointed nose, and distinctive cheek marks described as hardened mucus residue. His head possesses notable durability, capable of damaging teeth if bitten. He typically wears a single-button shirt, often red or yellow in colored art.
Childhood Chibita exhibits strong determination and resilience, evolving from a troublesome instigator into a sympathetic victim of the Matsuno sextuplets' bullying. He maintains a kind-hearted nature, forming deep bonds with animals like cats and frogs, though he occasionally displays deviousness or vengeful tendencies when wronged. His signature traits include a rough dialect, distinct "Kekeke" laugh, and phrases like "Teyande barou chikusho!" He compulsively carries a skewer of oden—typically layered with konjac, ganmodoki, and narutomaki—reflecting his obsession with the dish. He also demonstrates exceptional visual acuity and combat skills, occasionally surpassing Osomatsu in fights.
Relationships define much of his arc. He frequently partners with Iyami in schemes against the sextuplets, viewing him as a mentor or substitute family figure despite occasional betrayals. His dynamic with the sextuplets fluctuates between rivalry, revenge-seeking, and rare camaraderie. He often crushes on Totoko, sometimes portrayed as her cousin "Kan-chan" in early stories, though their interactions typically end dysfunctionally. Other connections include acting as Hatabō's superior and receiving sporadic paternal care from Dekapan.
Chibita starred in multiple spin-offs during the original manga run: *Akatsuka-kun Can Do Anything* (later retitled *$-chan and Chibita*), featuring a boy named Dorutaro ("$-chan") as his rival or partner; *Chibita Banzai*; and *Chibita-kun*, where he occasionally has a sister named Chibiko. These series emphasize his orphan status or unstable family life while showcasing his mischievous or protagonistic roles.
In *Osomatsu-san*, set a decade later, adult Chibita operates an oden stall. His height increases to 140–150cm, retaining his single hair and cheek marks while adopting a yellow shirt, blue shorts, and red bow tie. His adulthood centers on perfecting oden recipes—even bathing in broth—while grappling with the sextuplets' unpaid tabs and NEET lifestyles. Responsible yet easily provoked, he kidnaps Karamatsu for ransom in one episode and collaborates with Iyami in a rental girlfriend scam. After losing his single hair in "Chibita's Revenge", he violently retaliates against the sextuplets for past grievances. Despite this, he aids their rescue from Hell in the season 2 finale while demanding payment.
The film *Osomatsu-san: The Movie* explores his late-teens phase, where he wears a light-brown wig while apprenticing as a French chef to distance himself from oden. This period reveals suicidal melancholy over career failures until the sextuplets help him embrace oden vending as a valid path, restoring his contentment. In *Osomatsu-san: Hipipo-Zoku to Kagayaku Kajitsu*, Chibita appears in his established adult role.
