Dekapan, a recurring character originating in *Osomatsu-kun* and later appearing in its spinoff *Osomatsu-san* and the movie *Hipipo-Zoku to Kagayaku Kajitsu*, was created by manga artist Kenichiro Takai, an assistant to original creator Fujio Akatsuka, to expand the series' cast. His name, meaning "large pants," was chosen via a reader poll in *Shonen Sunday*.
Physically, Dekapan is a short, heavyset, middle-aged man. He has a bald head with sparse hairs at the base, crow's feet wrinkles, a thick black mustache, and a prominent bucktooth. His most distinctive feature is his attire: oversized striped boxer shorts worn alone. These pants conceal numerous objects, including live animals like cats, due to their width, not supernatural properties.
Personality-wise, Dekapan is generally mild-mannered, eccentric, and big-hearted. He occupies varied roles such as doctor, millionaire, or policeman. Contrasting more flamboyant characters, he displays a love for animals, often accompanied by a pet dog or cat named "Boya." His characterization is flexible, shifting from altruistic to antagonistic, appearing as a comical villain or mafia boss depending on the story. His speech includes frequent laughter, the interjection "hoe hoe," and ending sentences with "-dasu."
Dekapan's relationships are inconsistently defined. He is often presented as solitary, with a 1988 guide explicitly stating he has no family. However, narratives sometimes assign him familial ties, depicting him as a father or uncle figure to characters like Chibita, Hatabō, or Totoko. Rare portrayals show him with a wife and a toddler son named Tarō, who resembles him but wears pink-and-white striped boxers.
In *Osomatsu-san: Hipipo-Zoku to Kagayaku Kajitsu*, Dekapan appears as part of the supporting cast. His background and characteristics in the film align with earlier portrayals, emphasizing his eccentric yet versatile nature. A trivia note observes a resemblance between Dekapan and another Akatsuka character, "Keko-tan of Hokkairo," with no confirmed relation beyond visual similarity.
