TV-Series
Description
Rabura Chichibu is one of the residents of Korai House, the apartment building at the center of the anime Punch Line. Her name is also rendered in some English material as Lovera Chichibu. She is a teenage girl with green hair and blue eyes who lives in Room 202 and presents a gyaru image, a Japanese fashion subculture known for a bold, trendy, and outgoing look. She works as a professional spirit medium.
Her background is rooted in a family tradition of itako, traditional Japanese spirit mediums, a calling that has continued in her family for generations. Rabura followed that path and makes her living as a medium, yet she is a fake medium in the sense that she does not actually believe in the existence of ghosts. She therefore carries out spiritual practices for others while remaining privately skeptical about the supernatural side of her work.
Within Korai House, Rabura is a steady presence among the people living there. She keeps a pet turtle named Kamegishi-kun and is a friend of Akina Iridatsu, the older sister of the protagonist Yuta Iridatsu. Her most important relationship is with her cousin Ito Hikiotani, a reclusive student from a well-known private girls' school who does not attend classes and spends her time as an online gamer. Rabura cares a great deal for Ito, and it was her concern over Ito's shut-in lifestyle that led her to move her cousin from their parents' home to Korai House. She continues to look after Ito in practical ways, such as doing her shopping and keeping an eye on her health, though the bond between the two also shows signs of strain because Ito remains withdrawn from the world.
Rabura's family ties extend into the larger conflicts of the series as well. Her brother, Randou Chichibu, was once an avid member of the Qmay organization. After coming to understand the harmful consequences that Qmay's plans would bring, Randou ran away bearing a project known as the bear W, also called Muhi, a bear that later came into the care of Ito. Through her brother, Rabura is indirectly connected to the events surrounding Qmay.
Her motivations center on carrying on her family's trade and, above all, on protecting and providing for Ito. Her role in the story is that of a caretaker within the household and a link between the everyday lives of the Korai House residents and the wider mystery involving Qmay. Her notable ability is her trained skill in mediumship, which she performs as part of her occupation despite not believing in the spirits she is said to channel. Her development over the course of the story is expressed mainly through her relationships, especially the effort she invests in supporting Ito amid the difficulties between them.
