Description
Khajiit Dale Badantel is a character from the anime series Overlord, where he serves as a minor antagonist. He is a human male and a member of the secret organization Zurrernorn, holding the rank of one of its twelve core members, known as the Twelve High Disciples. His name is sometimes written as Khajiit Dale Badantel.
Khajiit was born in a common village on the outskirts of the Slane Theocracy. His life was irrevocably altered during his childhood when his mother died from a cerebral hemorrhage. He was not present at her death, and this absence, combined with his grief, developed into a deep-seated guilt and a powerful obsession. This trauma drove him to abandon his former dreams of becoming a hero and dedicate his entire existence to a single, impossible goal: finding a way to resurrect his mother.
His research into resurrection magic quickly revealed a significant obstacle. Conventional resurrection spells, which are typically of divine origin, require a substantial amount of life force from the deceased to function properly. Khajiit concluded that his mother, who died from illness, lacked the necessary vitality to be brought back through these normal means. Unwilling to accept this, he rejected his own religious faith, a decision symbolized by his intense dislike for being called by his baptismal name, Dale. He turned to the study ofarcane magic, specifically the school of necromancy, believing he could develop a new, non-faith-based method of resurrection.
Khajiit soon realized that a human lifespan would be insufficient to complete his research. To gain the endless time he believed he needed, he resolved to transform himself into an immortal undead being, a plan that would require immense amounts of negative energy. His obsessive quest and growing power attracted the attention of Zurrernorn, a cult of death and necromancy. He was recruited into the organization, which provided him with support and resources for his increasingly unethical experiments.
In terms of personality, Khajiit is a meticulous, calculating, and utterly ruthless individual. He is willing to sacrifice anyone to achieve his goals, showing no moral hesitation in his plans that would cause widespread death and suffering. For five years, he patiently orchestrated a scheme in the cemetery of the city of E-Rantel. His plan was to recreate a powerful, forbidden ritual known as the Death Spiral. By gathering an immense amount of negative energy from a mass death event, he would not only gain the power to become an undead lich but also advance his research toward resurrecting his mother.
Khajiit's role in the story is as an arc antagonist whose schemes inadvertently intersect with the plans of the protagonist, Ainz Ooal Gown. The final stage of his five-year plan involved the kidnapping of a young pharmacist named Nfirea, who was needed to use a powerful magical item. To rescue Nfirea, the adventurers Momon and Nabe are hired. Unbeknownst to Khajiit, Momon and Nabe are actually Ainz and the powerful battle maid Narberal Gamma in disguise.
He shares a key working relationship with Clementine, a psychotic former member of the Black Scripture. While she acts as muscle for his operation, their partnership is purely utilitarian. Clementine often taunts Khajiit by calling him Dale, which he despises. He also commands a number of unnamed disciple mages who assist him in his rituals and can use low-tier magic. A crucial and corrupting influence in his life is a magical artifact known as the Death Orb. This powerful, semi-sentient item is the core of his ritual, capable of storing vast amounts of negative energy and summoning powerful undead. However, it also subtly manipulates the mind of its wielder, exacerbating Khajiit's obsession and madness without his awareness.
Khajiit's development is a tragic arc of obsession leading to self-destruction. Despite his intelligence and meticulous planning, his judgment becomes impaired by his monomania and the influence of the Death Orb. He becomes overconfident in his own abilities, particularly his ultimate summons: two Skeletal Dragons, which are immune to magic below the sixth tier. He believes this makes them invincible against any magic caster in the New World. This hubris proves to be his fatal flaw.
As a necromancer, Khajiit's notable abilities are centered on summoning and controlling the undead. He can create and command over a hundred low-tier undead and specializes in summoning a few powerful creatures. His primary offensive strategy is to act as a summoner, letting his minions fight while he supports them with magic. When confronting Narberal Gamma, he confidently summons his two Skeletal Dragons. However, Narberal, who has been hiding her true power, unleashes a seventh-tier spell, the 2x Maximize Magic - Chain Dragon Lightning. This spell, far exceeding the immunity of the Skeletal Dragons, instantly destroys them and engulfs Khajiit, killing him in a single blow. In his final moments, he is not thinking of his plans or his revenge, but of his mother, calling out for her as he dies.
After his death, Khajiit's body was taken to a morgue in the Re-Estize Kingdom. However, it mysteriously disappeared the following day. The character Ainz later speculates that a member of Khajiit's own organization, Zurrernorn, may have retrieved and possibly even resurrected him, though his ultimate fate remains unknown.
