Description
Kero-chan is the affectionate nickname for Keroberos, the magical guardian of the Clow Cards. Created by the powerful sorcerer Clow Reed, Keroberos serves as the "Beast of the Seal" and holds the crucial responsibility of selecting the new Cardcaptor. For approximately thirty years before the story begins, he was sealed inside the Clow Book, which was kept in Osaka, a detail that explains his distinct Kansai dialect and friendly, down-to-earth manner of speaking. When Sakura Kinomoto accidentally opens the book and scatters the cards, Keroberos awakens from his long slumber and appoints her as the Cardcaptor, giving her the Sealing Wand and teaching her the basics of capturing the magical spirits.

In his everyday form, which he uses most of the time, Kero-chan appears as a small, orange-yellow plush creature resembling a stuffed animal or a lion cub, complete with small white wings and a lion's tail. This form is deliberately cute and unassuming, allowing him to pass as a doll or a toy. However, his true form is a magnificent, large lion-like beast with a full mane, enormous angelic white wings, and a metal chest plate. In this authentic state, he possesses immense power, including the ability to breathe fire and fly with great strength.

Kero-chan has a vibrant and outgoing personality. He is cheerful, talkative, and full of energy, often bringing a sense of liveliness to any situation. He is also notably proud and can be quite the narcissist, frequently boasting about his own coolness and importance. He has a great fondness for having fun, and his hobbies include playing video games, which he spends a great deal of time doing in Sakura's room, and eating. He has an insatiable sweet tooth, with a particular love for cakes, cookies, chocolates, and Japanese snacks like takoyaki, and he becomes distressed or even angry if his treats are forgotten. Despite his often bossy and demanding demeanor, he is genuinely wise and caring. He possesses extensive knowledge about mysticism and the Clow Cards, making him an invaluable advisor. While he prefers joyful and exciting times and dislikes anything sad or lonely, he also has a serious side and is deeply concerned with his duties and the welfare of those he cares about.

His primary role in the story is that of a mentor, guide, and companion to Sakura. He is the one who explains the nature of the Clow Cards, helps track them with his ability to sense magical presences, and offers strategic advice during captures. His motivation is to fulfill his duty as guardian by ensuring all the Clow Cards are recaptured and a worthy new master is chosen. Although he is the one who formally tests the new master in the Final Judgment, he becomes a steadfast ally to Sakura, believing in her potential and supporting her wholeheartedly.

Kero-chan's most significant relationship is with Sakura Kinomoto. While they often bicker and argue, especially when he is being greedy or she is being forgetful, their bond is one of deep mutual affection and trust. He sees her as a dear friend as much as a master and is fiercely protective of her. He also enjoys a warm relationship with Tomoyo Daidouji, who adores filming him and often provides him with delicious snacks and handmade costumes. His relationship with Syaoran Li is more combative; they frequently insult each other, with Syaoran calling him a stuffed toy and Kero-chan retaliating by calling him a brat, though this rivalry softens as they come to work together. His relationship with Yue, the other guardian of the Clow Cards, is complex. They are longtime colleagues and counterparts—Kero representing the sun and Yang, while Yue represents the moon and Yin. While they are not always in perfect harmony, they share a mutual respect and a deep understanding of their shared duty.

Throughout the series, Kero-chan undergoes notable development. Initially, he cannot access his true form or full power because his master, Sakura, has not yet captured the two cards that symbolize his elemental affinities, the Firey and the Earthy. Once these cards are secured, he can transform at will, representing a significant milestone in both Sakura's growth as a magician and his own ability to act as a full guardian. He also learns to adapt to modern life, becoming a beloved member of Sakura's household.

As a magical being, Kero-chan has several notable abilities. His power is based on the sun and is largely self-sustaining, unlike Yue who requires a master's magical energy to survive. He can use the energy from the sun to recover his strength, and his consumption of food also helps replenish his magical power. His primary ability is sensing the presence of Clow Cards and other magical auras. In his small form, he can fly and retains a degree of his strength. In his true form, he gains immense physical power, the ability to breathe potent fire, full flight capability, and the capacity to create protective energy barriers. He also holds jurisdiction over the Clow Cards associated with the sun and the elements of earth and fire.
