Description
Professor Hiragi, whose full name is Ichiroubei Hiiragi, is a scientist in the anime Mon Colle Knights and the father of Rokuna Hiiragi, one of the series' main characters. He is presented as an eccentric and somewhat mad scientist whose research centers on the existence of an alternate dimension known as the Six Gate World, or Mon World, a realm populated by a wide variety of mythical and magical creatures. His work makes travel between the human world and this other dimension possible, most notably through the completion of a dragon-shaped vehicle called the Suttobi Dragon, which serves as the group's main means of moving between the two worlds.
His role in the story is that of the instigator and supporting guide behind the central quest. After discovering a way to reach the Six Gate World, he recruits his daughter Rokuna and her classmate Mondo Ooya to serve as the Mon Colle Knights, the protectors of the Mon World. Together they search for six powerful hidden treasures known as the Mon Mon Items, relics that, when combined, have the ability to alter the barriers between dimensions. Used peacefully, these items could allow the magic and creatures of the Mon World to exist alongside the human world, a goal that appeals to Hiragi in part because he believes achieving it will make him famous. His pursuit of the items puts him in direct competition with Count Collection, another scientist who has also found a way into the Six Gate World and seeks the same treasures for the purpose of conquering both worlds. This rivalry places Hiragi's group in opposition to the Count and his underlings throughout the series.
In terms of personality, Hiragi is a comedic, absent-minded figure who fits the show's lighthearted tone. He is deeply absorbed in his research and noticeably obsessed with finding the Mon Mon Items, and he tends to treat rules and morals more loosely than his younger companions. Despite his self-interested streak and desire for recognition, he is not depicted as a villain, and he ultimately supports the goal of protecting the monsters of the Mon World and encouraging friendship between the two realms.
His key relationships are mostly defined by family and rivalry. As a father, he is somewhat neglectful, often spending long hours in his laboratory, which leaves Rokuna lonely at times. Even so, their bond is a caring one, and he makes efforts to support her, such as attending her school plays. His lack of fatherly authority means that Rokuna frequently corrects or scolds him rather than the other way around, and after his wife divorced him, Rokuna took on much of the responsibility for running the household herself. With Mondo, his relationship is that of a mentor and recruiter, bringing the boy into the adventure as a fellow Mon Colle Knight. With Count Collection, he shares a professional and personal rivalry, as the two scientists simultaneously found ways to access the Six Gate World and compete for the same six items.
In terms of development, Hiragi remains a consistent recurring presence rather than undergoing major personal change over the course of the series. His arc is tied to the progress of the item hunt, with his obsession driving the group forward while his daughter and Mondo develop as the central heroes. He is not a frontline combatant and does not take part directly in monster battles, and his contributions are primarily those of an inventor and researcher. His notable abilities include the scientific expertise needed to open a route to the Six Gate World, the engineering skill to build the Suttobi Dragon, and a deep understanding of the Mon Mon Items and the dimensional mechanics surrounding them.
