Beginner, known in the original Japanese version as Beginner-chan, is a recurring character in the series. She is a cute but notably accident-prone girl with a large appetite who is training to become a powerful monster summoner. As her name suggests, she is still a beginner in the mystical arts, possessing immense magical potential but lacking the skill and control to reliably wield it. This lack of control is a central running gag, most famously demonstrated by her frequent casting of a Meteor Strike spell, which almost always misses its intended target and ends up destroying something else, often to the dismay of her allies.

Beginner’s personality is marked by a cheerful, scatterbrained, and recklessly optimistic demeanor. She has a distinctive way of speaking in the Japanese version, often referring to herself in the third person and ending her sentences with the suffix mon. She is also known for referring to the protagonists Mondo and Rokuna as a single entity, Roku-Mon-chan, much to their irritation. Despite her klutziness and the frustration her actions sometimes cause, she possesses a clear sense of fairness and is not afraid to point out when the main characters are being hypocritical, such as when they fail to treat monsters with the same respect they would show to humans. She is rash and impulsive, but she will own up to her mistakes.

In the story, Beginner acts as a friend and occasional ally to Mondo and Rokuna. Her primary motivation is to improve her summoning abilities, training under her grandfather, Expert, who runs a summoning academy. Due to her limited magical control, the only spell she has a good grip on is Teleport, which she frequently uses to pop up in various locations, often having fainted from hunger. It is in this manner that she first encounters the main characters. Her role often involves complicating situations with her misfired spells, but she also genuinely tries to help the Mon Colle Knights in their quests, such as when she brings them to her grandfather’s school for training. She is also shown participating in major battles, fighting alongside other allies in the final conflict.

Key relationships include her friendship with Mondo and Rokuna, whom she considers her friends despite her habit of annoying them. Another significant dynamic involves Luke, a fellow student who is in love with Beginner, though she remains completely oblivious to his affections. Her grandfather, Expert, is an important figure in her life as her teacher and guardian.

Beginner shows minimal character development, remaining largely static and serving as a comic relief character throughout the series. However, her abilities are notable. She possesses an immense reserve of magical power, which is considered far beyond average. The problem is her almost complete inability to control it. While she can cast powerful spells like Meteor Strike, Lightning Strike, Earth Wall, and Time Reset, their effects are wildly unpredictable. Her signature spell, Teleport, is the only one she can use with any reliability, and she once accomplished the nearly impossible feat of teleporting out of the realm of Kharon, exhausting herself in the process.
