Description
Mondo Ooya is one of the main protagonists of Mon Colle Knights. He begins the series as a regular elementary student who has a strong passion for the Monster Collection trading card game and harbors a crush on his classmate Rokuna Hiiragi. When Rokuna’s father, Professor Ichirobei Hiiragi, invents a way to travel to the parallel Mon World, Mondo is recruited alongside Rokuna to become a Mon Colle Knight. After overcoming his initial shock at discovering a different universe and the unusual outfit he is given, he adapts quickly to his new role. His personality is characterized by spunky courage and determination, and he serves as the physical strength of the team. He has a particular fondness for dragons, but his most constant companion is a Pegasus he meets early in the series, which starts as a chibi-like creature and later grows into a full-sized winged horse; the two form a deep and loyal friendship. Mondo tends to see the world through what might be called “Moe glasses”: whenever he encounters cute girls who appear to need help, he immediately shifts into a heroic mode, sometimes even taking off his shirt. However, these girls are rarely in genuine emotional distress, and Rokuna often reacts violently to bring him back to reality. His frequent flirting with other characters does not stem from a lack of care for Rokuna; rather, he seems unable to control this impulse. His motivations are closely tied to Rokuna’s: he hopes to collect the six mystical items that can unite the human world and Mon World, working to achieve peace between the two realms. A significant part of his role involves opposing Prince Eccentro and his underlings, who seek the same items to dominate both worlds. Over the course of the series, Mondo demonstrates consistent endurance and a quick ability to merge with and control various monsters, using the phrase “Adara Kadara Buu” to do so. Little is revealed about his home life in the human world, and as the story progresses he increasingly appears to live with the Hiiragi family. One persistent mystery about his appearance is the criss-crossing bandage on his forehead, the origin of which is never explained.
