Description
Fiore is the primary antagonist in the Sailor Moon R: The Movie. His name is derived from the Italian word for flower. He is an alien being whose exact species is unknown, though his pointed ears and overall design bear a resemblance to the alien siblings Ail and An from the Sailor Moon R anime series.

Fiore's background is established before the events of the film. As a child, he was stranded on Earth and encountered a young Mamoru Chiba who was hospitalized after the tragic death of his parents. The two lonely children formed a bond of friendship on the hospital rooftop, with Fiore finding in Mamoru a sincere connection. Before Fiore departed Earth, as his body could not survive the planet's atmosphere for long, Mamoru gave him a rose. In return, Fiore promised to one day return and present Mamoru with the most beautiful flower he could find in the entire galaxy.

Personality wise, Fiore is a deeply emotional character whose motives stem from loneliness and a profound affection for his first and only friend. He is initially presented as gentle and genuine, but this is twisted over time by isolation and external influence. After years of wandering space alone, his innocent childhood attachment to Mamoru curdles into an obsessive and possessive yearning. He becomes intensely jealous of anyone close to Mamoru, particularly Usagi Tsukino, whom he views as a rival. His cruel and violent actions are rooted in a vulnerable, misunderstood heart that feels betrayed by what he sees as Mamoru forgetting their promise. He is susceptible to manipulation due to this emotional fragility.

In the story, Fiore returns to Earth as a young man to fulfill his childhood promise. He appears during an outing with Mamoru, Usagi, and the other Sailor Guardians, introducing himself as a friend from Mamoru's past. Upon seeing the close relationship between Mamoru and Usagi, Fiore becomes hostile, violently pushing her away. He subsequently orchestrates attacks on Tokyo using plant monsters, with the intention of destroying Sailor Moon. During a confrontation, Fiore attempts to stab Sailor Moon with his long, sharp fingernails, but Mamoru as Tuxedo Mask intercepts the blow and is gravely wounded. Overcome with regret, Fiore kidnaps the unconscious Mamoru and takes him to an asteroid that is on a collision course with Earth.

The asteroid is the base of the Xenian Flower, a powerful, malevolent, and sentient plant-like being that Fiore discovered during his travels. The Xenian Flower is the true mastermind of the plot, latching onto and manipulating Fiore's vulnerable mind to use him as a host. It amplifies his feelings of loneliness and jealousy into a nihilistic hatred, using him to spread its seeds and drain the life energy from all of humanity. Throughout the film, Fiore is visibly struggling against its control, which manifests in physical transformations.

A key relationship is with Mamoru, his only friend. Fiore's love for Mamoru is the core of his being, though it is implied to be more than platonic. His actions, from seeking the perfect flower to trying to eliminate Usagi, are all for Mamoru's sake. His relationship with Usagi is one of bitter rivalry, fueled by jealousy over her place in Mamoru's life and her ability to give him the happiness and family Fiore believes he himself cannot provide. The Xenian Flower acts as a parasitic but symbiotic relationship, preying on him but also giving him the power to act on his darkest impulses.

Over the course of the narrative, Fiore undergoes significant development. As Sailor Moon stands defenseless before him, she communicates her own memories and feelings to him. Through her, he sees a vision of a young Usagi giving a rose to a young Mamoru at the same hospital where he first met his friend, revealing that the very rose Mamoru gave to Fiore had originally come from her. This realization breaks the Xenian Flower's hold over him. Seeing that Mamoru has found true happiness with someone who has loved him since childhood, Fiore repents for his actions. After Sailor Moon uses the power of the Silver Crystal to save the Earth and seemingly dies in the process, a now child-like and pure Fiore reappears. Using his own life energy, he produces a flower whose nectar revives her, finally fulfilling his promise to give Mamoru the most beautiful flower in the universe. His sacrifice allows him to find peace, and he disappears.

Fiore possesses a number of notable abilities. As an alien, he has a true form that differs from his human disguise. He can levitate, teleport himself and others across vast distances, and create objects from nothing. In combat, he can extend his fingernails into razor-sharp claws for slashing attacks, generate powerful shockwaves to throw his enemies, and project bolts of destructive energy. He also demonstrates superhuman strength and speed. After being further empowered by the Xenian Flower, his appearance changes, his hair becoming long and pink, and his power increases dramatically. He is also able to create and command armies of plant-based monsters.
