Description
Mario Musicanova serves as the sub-captain aboard the spaceship Bilkis in the science fiction anime series Geneshaft. He is the older brother of Tiki Musicanova, a fellow crew member. In the society depicted in the series, genetic engineering has eliminated emotions such as love and family bonds are considered obsolete, but Mario stands apart by believing in the concept of love and feeling that the world holds more meaning than just DNA. His background includes a childhood incident where he once ate a Register's pill, which had no effect since he was not a Register himself. He was academically second only to Jean in his class at school, and the two maintain a rivalry throughout the story.

Personality wise, Mario is skilled at lying and leading, traits that serve him in his command role. He is introspective and questions the societal norms that suppress emotional connections. His primary motivation is to experience love firsthand, a pursuit that drives many of his actions. Within the narrative, Mario initially serves as the sub-captain but takes over as captain when Captain Hiroto Amagiwa begins to hallucinate and falls ill. In this capacity, he awakens memories that his colleague Beatrice had thought she had deleted from her own brain. He forms a close bond with Beatrice, feeling closer to her than he did to his previous assigned Register.

Key relationships include his sibling connection with Tiki, his deepening attachment to Beatrice, and his competitive dynamic with Jean. Later in the story, when teleportation technology is created by another character named Mir, Mario uses it to transport himself to Jean's ship, the Youki. Just before his death, he declares that he is going to see love for himself, and Jean responds by telling him to show it. Mario's development highlights a questioning of the genetically engineered society and a willingness to sacrifice himself in pursuit of a genuine emotional experience. His notable abilities include strong leadership, strategic thinking, and a capacity for deception when necessary, all underpinned by his high-grade DNA, though he does not overtly demonstrate his skills.
