Description
Mika Seido is the main protagonist of the anime series Geneshaft. She is a sixteen-year-old girl who holds the rank of second lieutenant and serves as the leading pilot of the Shaft, a giant mecha used by the space vessel Bilkis. Mika stands about five feet four inches tall and has medium-length orange hair and orange eyes. Her genetic classification is "white," meaning she was born without the genetic modifications that define most people in her society. This unmodified status causes many around her to look down on her, as white-genetype individuals are considered inferior or incomplete. Despite this prejudice, her natural determination and adaptability allow her to become the primary Shaft driver, earning respect from some crew members over time.

Mika is described as a bright and energetic person, but she also possesses a passionate and aggressive streak that sets her apart from the more controlled members of her genetically engineered society. She is fiercely loyal, especially to those she cares about, such as her dog Bismarck—a genetically enhanced animal that can communicate with her via computer from Earth while she is in space. She was also very close to the woman who engineered her, whom she regards as her mother. This background gives Mika a strong emotional core in a world that discourages personal attachments.

Her motivations stem from a desire to prove her worth and to uncover the truth about the alien threat facing humanity. Early in the story, Mika holds a deep grudge against Hiroto Amagi, the captain of the Bilkis, because she believes he was responsible for the death of her childhood friend during a training accident. It is later revealed that the friend actually sacrificed herself to save Hiroto, and that the two had met as children but forgotten. This revelation leads Mika to forgive Hiroto, and by the end of the series she develops romantic feelings for him. Her relationship with Hiroto evolves from cold hostility to trust and love, marking a key part of her emotional development.

Mika plays a central role in the plot as the primary pilot of the Shaft, which is humanity's main weapon against a mysterious ring-shaped alien artifact that threatens Earth. Her skill as a pilot is notable not because of genetic enhancement but because of her innate perseverance and flexibility. She learns to master the Shaft through experience and determination, often outperforming genetically superior pilots. Her abilities grow as she faces increasingly dangerous battles and uncovers secrets about the alien technology and the true nature of her world.

Throughout the series, Mika undergoes significant personal growth. She begins as an isolated figure who carries the weight of her friend's death and the stigma of her white genetype, but she gradually forms bonds with her crewmates, confronts her past, and learns to trust others. Her journey challenges the rigid genetic hierarchy of her society and demonstrates that natural human qualities such as passion, loyalty, and resilience have value that genetic engineering cannot replace.
