Description
Gene Starwind is a 20-year-old bounty hunter and the captain of the titular starship, the Outlaw Star. He operates from the desert planet of Sentinel III, where he co-owns a small odd-jobs and bounty-hunting business called Starwind and Hawking Enterprises with his young partner, Jim Hawking.

His past is marked by a deep trauma. When he was 14 years old, his father was killed during a space pirate attack, and Gene was forced into the ship's only escape pod. This event instilled in him both a profound hatred of pirates and a severe phobia of space flight, a fear he struggles to overcome for much of his early journey. He is a tall, lean man with red hair, blue eyes, and a body covered in scars, the most prominent being two on his left cheek, which serve as physical evidence of his violent life.

Personality-wise, Gene is presented as a classic, if unlikely, hero. He is brash, cocky, and notoriously lazy, always preferring to achieve his goals with the least amount of effort possible. He is a shameless womanizer and a heavy drinker, habits that constantly frustrate the more responsible and level-headed Jim. Despite these immature and often selfish traits, Gene possesses a strong, if often hidden, moral core. He is fiercely loyal to his crew and capable of great courage and selflessness, particularly when protecting those he cares about.

His primary motivation becomes intertwined with the series' central quest. After coming into possession of a powerful, revolutionary spaceship and a mysterious bio-android named Melfina, Gene promises to help her discover the purpose of her existence. This leads him on a dangerous race to find the legendary Galactic Leyline, a location said to grant any wish, while being pursued by the militaristic Kei Pirates and the ruthless MacDougall brothers, the latter being the mercenaries responsible for his father's death.

Gene's key relationships define his personal growth. His partnership with 11-year-old Jim Hawking is sibling-like, with Gene acting as the wildly irresponsible older brother to Jim's pragmatic, worried younger one. However, his most significant relationship is with Melfina. Initially hesitant to act on his growing feelings for her for fear of vulnerability, Gene's journey forces him to confront his emotional walls. By the end of the series, he comes to fully realize his love for her, choosing her over any reward the Galactic Leyline could offer.

As the captain of the Outlaw Star, Gene serves as the pilot and combat strategist, operating the ship's unique grappler arms in battle. He initially suffers from severe space sickness due to his phobia, but his time aboard the ship gradually cures him of this fear. On the ground, Gene is a formidable and adaptable fighter, proficient with a variety of weapons including pistols, grenade launchers, and rocket launchers. His signature weapon, however, is an antique Caster gun, which fires rare and powerful magic shells. These shells are effective against supernatural threats like Tao magic, with numbers 4, 9, and 13 being the most powerful but also the most dangerous to the user. He also utilizes his own ear piercings as a covert two-way radio to communicate with Jim. Throughout the series, Gene evolves from a space-fearing, self-centered drifter into a responsible captain and a man willing to openly express his love and commitment, ultimately choosing to continue his adventures in space with his newfound family.
