Description
Kiriko Masaki, who later becomes known as Kiriko Masaki Jurai, is a primary character in the Tenchi Muyo! GXP narrative. To the outside world, she appears to be a university student in Tokyo, but this is a cover for her real life as an officer in the Galaxy Police. She is a distant descendant of the Jurai Royal Family, specifically of First Prince Yosho and his wife Kasumi, giving her a secret heritage that she discovered by accident as a child. This heritage connects her to the wider Masaki family on Earth.
Kiriko spent her childhood as a close friend and protector of the protagonist, Seina Yamada. Due to Seina's extraordinarily bad luck, which constantly caused him injuries and accidents, Kiriko often tended to his wounds and shielded him from further harm. Her younger brother, Kai, was Seina's first friend, and the three of them grew up together. A formative event in her youth involved a biological weapon, a sentient symbiote, that she believed would target Seina. In her attempt to save him, the symbiote attached itself to her, leading to a traumatic injury where her arm had to be severed, an incident that left lingering psychological effects.
Her personality is defined by a deep, protective love for Seina, though she initially struggles to admit this to herself or others, often framing her feelings as sisterly. Kiriko is generally composed and professional, but she can become jealous, particularly regarding Amane Kaunaq, another woman in Seina's life. Beneath her calm exterior lies a fierce and potentially dangerous combatant. In battle, she is known to be ruthless, focusing entirely on defeating her opponents, a side of herself she worries about Seina seeing. This ferocity is part of her motivation; she feels a strong sense of responsibility for Seina's safety, which drives many of her actions.
Kiriko's primary role in the story is as Seina's protector, instructor, and eventual love interest. After learning that Seina had enrolled in the Galaxy Police, she tried to convince him to return to Earth. Failing that, she was assigned to the Galaxy Police Academy as an instructor, partly to keep an eye on Seina and also to monitor her rival, Amane. She later becomes a member of the crew of the Kamidake II, serving as the ship's operator under Seina's captaincy. Her role evolves from a distant guardian to a direct participant in his space adventures.
Her key relationships center on Seina. Although she left Earth partly to escape the constant strain of his bad luck, a fact that brings her guilt, she remains devoted to him. She becomes engaged to Seina as part of a political marriage, a development that brings her joy. Another significant relationship is with Seto Kamiki Jurai, for whom Kiriko served as a lady-in-waiting. This connection helped her advance in the Galaxy Police and ultimately led to her bonding with a second-generation Royal Tree named Mizuki in a ceremony that officially made her a princess of Jurai.
Kiriko undergoes considerable development throughout the series. Initially, she tries to maintain an emotional distance from Seina, but she eventually confronts her own feelings and accepts her place among the women who love him. Feelings of inadequacy compared to the other women in Seina's life, such as the supermodel Amane, the noble space pirate Ryoko Balta, and the high priestess Neju Na Melmas, push her to seek the power and status that bonding with a Royal Tree provides. This act solidifies her confidence and her role in Seina's future. Ultimately, Kiriko and Seina have a child together, marking the full realization of their lifelong connection.
In terms of abilities, Kiriko is a highly skilled Galaxy Police officer with an accomplished career. She is proficient in hand-to-hand combat and is known for her expertise with cloaking technology, which allows her to strike enemies by surprise. Her Juraian heritage grants her superhuman strength. She is also a capable mecha pilot; she is given a powerful unit called Yomotsuookami, also known as the Charon Wolf, which was originally designed by the genius scientist Washu. Piloting this mecha, Kiriko demonstrated devastating effectiveness in combat, single-handedly destroying numerous enemy mechs in a duel and proving herself one of the most formidable knights in the history of the Renza Federation.
