Description
Nova, also known as Yuki Mori, is a central character in the anime Star Blazers. Born in 2181, she is the daughter of Naoyuki Mori, a Japanese undersecretary for foreign affairs. After a tragic attack that killed her parents, she suffered amnesia and was placed under the guardianship of Admiral Ryu Hijikata. She eventually joins the Earth Defense Force, initially serving as a nurse under Dr. Sane. Her role quickly expands to include radar operation, computer calculations, maintaining crew morale, and surveying planets for resources. In the 2199 remake continuity, she holds the rank of Air Captain First Class and serves as the Ship Affairs Division Officer aboard the Yamato, responsible for information, electronics, communications, coding, and hull demagnetization, as well as managing radar and radio communications on the bridge.

Nova is described as beautiful, talented, and resourceful. She balances multiple duties with calm competence and is as dedicated and capable as any male crew member. Her personality combines a fierce combat spirit with a gentle, nurturing side, often characterized as a tigress in battle and a dove during peace. She is initially shy about her feelings for Derek Wildstar and conceals them with girlish glee, but as the series progresses, her emotional strength and maturity grow. Her motivations are rooted in a deep sense of duty to protect Earth and the people she cares about. She is driven by loyalty to her crewmates and a desire to see the mission succeed, even at great personal risk.

Her primary relationship is with Derek Wildstar, the tactical officer and later acting captain of the Argo. The bond that develops between them is a key emotional thread throughout the story, evolving from mutual respect and attraction into a deep, lasting love. She also shares a close working relationship with Captain Avatar, Dr. Sane, and the rest of the bridge crew, serving as a stabilizing presence. Over the course of the series, Nova undergoes significant development. She begins as a nurse and radar operator but grows into a leader, eventually taking command of the supply carrier Asuka in the 2205 era. She proves her ability in combat and strategy, often playing a critical role in the ship’s defense and engaging in piloting and ground missions.

Her notable abilities include medical expertise, advanced radar and communications skills, computer analysis, survey and reconnaissance, and eventually command and tactical decision-making. She is also a skilled fighter and pilot when the situation demands it. By the conclusion of the original series, she marries Derek Wildstar and raises a daughter named Miyuki, who later becomes a veterinary nurse. Throughout all versions of the story, Nova stands as a symbol of resilience, compassion, and unwavering dedication to both her mission and her comrades.
