Description
Moro is an ancient wolf goddess who rules over the wolf clan in the forest. She is more than three hundred years old, possessing divine power and intelligence, and she is able to understand and speak human languages. Her physical appearance is imposing: long white fur that shimmers with an ethereal quality, olive eyes set in red sclera, a purple-brown nose, large teeth, and two magnificent tails that set her apart as a deity. Her size is enormous; when seated, her adoptive daughter San stands only as tall as Moro’s head.

Moro’s personality blends deep wisdom, fierce determination, and maternal tenderness. She is clear-sighted about humanity’s destructive tendencies and holds a profound hatred for humans, especially Lady Eboshi, whom she dreams of killing. Yet beneath that vengeful exterior is a profoundly nurturing spirit. She raised San as her own daughter after the infant’s human parents abandoned her in the forest, and she instilled in San the instincts and behaviors of a wolf. Moro is fiercely protective of her pack, her cubs, and the forest itself, and she is unafraid to put herself in danger for their sake.

Her primary motivation is to defend the forest and its sacred Forest Spirit from human encroachment. She wages a relentless war against Lady Eboshi and the ironworks that are clear-cutting the land and mining for ore. She also seeks to protect San, despite knowing that San is human by birth. Her desire for vengeance against Eboshi is personal: Eboshi shot her with an iron gun, wounding her and stripping her of her immortality.

In the story, Moro serves as the leader of the wolf clan and a key representative of the animal gods’ resistance against industrialization. She is San’s adoptive mother and mentor, teaching her to run and fight like a wolf. She initially views the human prince Ashitaka with hostility, but after witnessing his courage and his genuine affection for San, she acknowledges his sincerity and allows him to leave the forest. Her most significant relationship is with San, whom she loves unconditionally despite her human origins. She also has a complex past with the boar god Okkoto, who was once her lover. Her two unnamed wolf cubs are her biological offspring, and she guides them with strength and care.

Moro undergoes a tragic arc. After being shot by Eboshi, she becomes mortal and later accepts her fate with stoic grace. In the final confrontation, she is mortally wounded, but even after her head is severed, her spirit reanimates long enough to bite off Eboshi’s arm in a final defiant act. She then charges toward the Forest Spirit’s body and dies, leaving behind a legacy of sacrifice for the natural world.

Her notable abilities include supernatural size and strength, the power to speak human languages, and her status as a deity that once made her immortal. She also possesses two tails, a mark of her divine nature, and commands the loyalty of her wolf pack. Her ferocity in battle and her unwavering commitment to her territory make her a formidable warrior.
