Description
Koroku is a resident of Irontown, the fortified iron-mining settlement governed by Lady Eboshi. He is the husband of Toki, a strong and industrious woman who works the bellows in the town's ironworks. His most distinguishing personal trait is his pronounced fear of the Kodama, the small, glowing, and supernatural spirits of the forest, which marks him as a superstitious and cautious individual deeply uneasy with the magical world that surrounds his home. As a minor supporting character, he represents the ordinary working populace of Irontown, grounding the epic conflict in the experience of common folk. His primary involvement in the narrative occurs during a supply run when he, Lady Eboshi, and a group of men are ambushed by the wolf goddess Moro and the human girl San. The attack leaves Koroku vulnerable and frightened, and he is rescued by the protagonist Ashitaka, an act that highlights Ashitaka’s mediating and protective nature. Koroku’s motivations are simple and centered on survival, fulfilling his duties to his community, and remaining safe alongside his wife. He demonstrates no supernatural abilities or combat prowess, nor does he undergo a significant personal transformation. His role is instead to flesh out the social fabric of Irontown, providing a contrast to the fierce independence of Toki and the commanding leadership of Lady Eboshi, and to illustrate the very human stakes within the larger conflict between industry and nature.
