Description
Kain is the primary antagonist of the first Tenchi Muyo theatrical film. He is an incredibly powerful entity classified as a Super A-Class, or Super A-1, criminal by the Galaxy Police. His background is that of a devastating force of destruction, having been responsible for the destruction of hundreds of starships and thousands of lives approximately one hundred years before the film's main events. His reign of terror was only ended through a combined effort of the Galaxy Police and the Jurai Emperor, who made the supreme sacrifice to finally capture Kain and imprison him within a subspace room at Galaxy Police Headquarters.
Kain is a being of immense power and arrogance, driven by a singular, destructive motivation: revenge against the royal family of Jurai. After a century of captivity, he escapes his prison, destroys the Galaxy Police headquarters, and travels twenty-six years into the past to the year 1970. His goal is to kill a young woman named Achika Masaki. This act is not personal but strategic, as eliminating Achika would prevent the birth of her future son, Tenchi Masaki, thereby erasing Tenchi from existence and profoundly altering the futures of his allies, including the Jurai princesses Ayeka and Sasami. This establishes his primary role in the story as a temporal threat, a villain who manipulates time itself to exact his vengeance.
Kain is a figure of few direct relationships, defined almost entirely by his enmity. His most significant connection is his hatred for the Jurai imperial bloodline. He does not seek allies, only to destroy his enemies across time. His key relationship is with Achika, whom he views not as a person but as a linchpin to be removed from history. He also directly confronts Tenchi, Ryoko, and Ayeka when they pursue him into the subspace prison-world he creates. Throughout the narrative, Kain shows little to no development or change in character. He remains a fixed, relentless force of malice from his introduction to his final moments. His role is to serve as the catalyst for the time-travel plot and to provide an overwhelming physical challenge that the heroes must overcome.
Kain possesses a wide array of formidable abilities befitting his status as a super-criminal. He is virtually invulnerable, capable of surviving in the vacuum of space and withstanding direct hits from Galaxy Police plasma cannons. He has the power to travel through both space and time with ease. In combat, he can launch powerful energy blasts, breathe fire and ice, elongate his body, and absorb people through a vortex within himself. The black areas of his form are shown to have corrosive properties. His most formidable power is the ability to manipulate space-time, which he uses to create a prison-world in subspace. When challenged, he can transform into a more powerful, draconian second form. Despite his immense strength, Kain possesses a specific and critical weakness: the Power of Jurai. This energy is anathema to him, and he is vulnerable to attacks that channel it. Ultimately, this weakness is exploited when a mortally wounded Achika awakens her own Jurai powers, using the Tenchi-ken to bisect Kain. His remains are subsequently obliterated by a dimensional cannon fired by Kiyone, ensuring his final destruction.
