Description
Neko Kuroha is the lead heroine of Brynhildr in the Darkness. She is a magician, also referred to as a witch, who escaped from a secret research laboratory where she was designated as Research Number 7620. Originally classified as a B-rank magician at the start of the story, she was once a far more powerful S-rank prototype known as the first Valkyria, but her abilities and memories gradually degraded over time due to extensive experimentation and the effects of the drugs used to suppress her powers. As a result of the laboratory's procedures, she lost almost all of her childhood memories, retaining only faint emotional impressions.

Neko Kuroha was actually Ryouta Murakami's childhood friend, Kuroneko, who was presumed dead after a fall from a dam when they were children. Kuroneko survived the accident but was taken by the research organization and transformed into a magician, losing her memories in the process. Ryouta eventually identifies her by three moles near her armpit, a unique mark he remembered from their past. After escaping the laboratory, Neko enrolls at Ryouta's school and becomes the vice president of the Astronomy Club, which Ryouta leads. She initially has no recollection of her past with him and is puzzled by his intense interest in her.

Neko's personality is generally gentle, caring, and somewhat shy, but she can become short-tempered when embarrassed. She is prone to jealousy when Ryouta grows close to other girls, especially the magician Kazumi Schlierenzauer, and unconsciously uses her magic to destroy objects around her when she feels this way, a reaction she herself does not fully understand. Despite being a powerful magician, she is emotionally vulnerable and deeply dependent on the Death Suppressant pills she must take every thirty to thirty-five hours to prevent her body from disintegrating. Her primary motivation is to survive and protect those she cares about, especially Ryouta and her fellow escaped magicians. She also feels a strong sense of responsibility to prevent the deaths of innocent people, which is why she initially enrolled in school.

Her notable ability is telekinesis that allows her to destroy any inanimate object. She can also transfer this destructive power through direct contact with organic beings. Her power was so immense while in the lab that she required extensive testing and special restraints. In a critical confrontation with the Valkyria Mako Fujisaki, Neko presses a third button on her neck harness, a process that has a ninety-nine point nine percent chance of killing her. This act restores her original S-rank powers and her lost memories as Kuroneko, unlocking the ability to create a micro black hole. After defeating Mako with this power, she loses all of her memories again, including everything she experienced as Neko Kuroha, leaving her as a stranger to Ryouta.

Her key relationships center on Ryouta Murakami, whom she unconsciously feels a deep connection to despite her amnesia. She also forms bonds with other escaped magicians, including the paralyzed Kana Tachibana and the hacker Kazumi Schlierenzauer, as well as the younger Kotori Takatori. These relationships define her struggle to build a normal life while evading the laboratory's assassins and managing the constant threat of her own magical deterioration. Throughout the story, her development traces a tragic arc from amnesiac escapee to a brief, powerful reawakening of her true self, followed by a return to a blank state, highlighting the high cost of her abilities and the cruelty of the experiments she endured.
