Description
Julia Crystal, known as Masumi Kotsu in the original Japanese version, is a character from the anime Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V. She is a student at the Leo Institute of Dueling, where she serves as the representative for the Fusion Summon course.
Julia is a teenage girl with a dark skin tone, shoulder-length black hair, and red eyes. Her standard outfit consists of a small blue shirt with her LID badge pinned on it, worn over a cream one-piece long-sleeved shirt and shorts combination. She also wears black skin-tight shorts underneath that end above the knee, paired with blue boots. She carries her Duel Disk in a brown holster that resembles a firearm.
In terms of personality, Julia is a direct, straightforward, and bold individual who shows little hesitation in speaking her mind. Her father is a jeweler, and having grown up appraising valuable gems, she possesses a keen ability to detect talent and hesitation in others, often judging their mental state by the gleam in their eyes. While she can be prone to mockery, her observations are usually accurate, meaning she does not act out of pure arrogance but rather from a place of sharp perception. She is not easily fooled and is willing to seek the truth when she suspects she is being misled. Despite her tough exterior, she can be visibly unnerved, as seen during her first encounter with Shay Obsidian. Julia is also a deeply caring person who values her friends and teachers greatly. She is particularly devoted to her Fusion instructor, Professor Marco, and becomes frantic in her attempts to find him following his disappearance. She does not tolerate insults towards him.
Julia's primary motivation throughout her early story is her loyalty to the Leo Institute of Dueling and her desire to protect those she cares about. After her teacher Marco vanishes, she becomes determined to uncover the truth and bring the culprit to justice, even going so far as to use herself as bait to lure out the assailant. Her sense of responsibility and honor as a representative of her course is a key driving force.
In the story, Julia is first introduced as an antagonist to the You Show Duel School. She is one of three LID elites enlisted to duel members of the You Show school in retaliation for a perceived attack. She duels Zuzu Boyle, defeating her in a close match after making a pointed observation that Zuzu's eyes lack a certain brilliance. Following the disappearance of Professor Marco, she investigates the attacks on LID students, which leads her to confront the Xyz Duelist Shay Obsidian. In a Battle Royale alongside her teammates, she is overwhelmingly defeated by Shay, and her memory of the event is subsequently rewritten to believe Shay is a fellow LID member.
During the Arc League Championship, Julia is shown to have developed a mutual respect for Zuzu Boyle. The two are pitted against each other in the tournament. In their second duel, Julia showcases her improved skills by summoning her true ace monster, Gem-Knight Lady Brilliant Diamond. Although she loses the match, her defeat is honorable. After the duel, Julia approaches Zuzu and gives her a prized card, Crystal Rose, as a gesture of friendship and respect, telling Zuzu that she would not accept her losing the tournament. Her key relationships include her teammates Dipper O'rion and Kit Blade, with whom she frequently bickers but remains loyal, and Zuzu Boyle, who evolves from a rival into a respected peer.
As a duelist, Julia specializes in Fusion Summoning and uses a Gem-Knight deck, which she chose due to her father's profession as a jeweler. Her early strategy involves quickly Fusion Summoning Gem-Knight Master Diamond to copy the effects of other Gem-Knight monsters to achieve an OTK. Later, she adopts cards like Brilliant Fusion and her true ace, Gem-Knight Lady Brilliant Diamond, which allows for more flexible Fusion Summoning. A notable ability of hers is a sharp analytical mind, enabling her to read her opponents' emotions and intentions simply by looking into their eyes.
