Description
Meguro Kanetake, more commonly known by his nickname Megane, serves as the head of the mechanics department for the organization A.E.G.I.S.. A young boy recognized as a genius, he possesses an extraordinary natural talent for repairing and understanding complex machinery. His nickname, which is simply the Japanese word for glasses, reflects his most prominent physical feature and is a common moniker for children who wear spectacles; in the English version of the series, he is referred to as Specs.

Megane's primary role within the team is that of technical support and logistics. Rather than being a frontline fighter, he is the person who ensures the Gate Keepers have the equipment they need to succeed. He is responsible for delivering critical assets, such as the Gate Engine or the massive Gate Robo, directly to the other characters during their missions. A key example of his skill and dedication occurs after a devastating battle at Tokyo Tower leaves A.E.G.I.S.'s primary robot in a state of complete disrepair. Megane takes on the considerable challenge of restoring the disabled machine, successfully equipping it with a prototype Gate Engine created by the father of the protagonist, Shun Ukiya.

In terms of personality and relationships, Megane is depicted as a diligent and highly capable individual who is deeply integrated into the A.E.G.I.S. team. He shares a notably close friendship with the character Bancho, who frequently assists Megane with the heavy lifting and hands-on work required to upgrade and repair the organization's various vehicles. This partnership highlights that while Megane is the intellectual powerhouse behind the mechanical operations, he relies on his friends to help bring his solutions to life.

While detailed information about his personal motivations and background is limited to his role as a mechanic, the character appears in multiple installments of the Gate Keepers universe. The 2000 anime television series features him as a supporting character, and his full name, Meguro Kanetake, is revealed in the novel Gate Keepers 1985, which bridges the story between the original series and its sequel, Gate Keepers 21. Megane's defining trait remains his unwavering utility to the team; his intelligence and mechanical expertise make him an indispensable asset in the fight against the Invaders, providing the technological backbone that allows the other Gate Keepers to effectively use their powers.
