Description
Hotaru Tachibana is the central character of the narrative and a high school student who holds the position of student council president. Despite her official title, she is anything but a conventional authority figure. Hotaru is a biologically female teenager who is almost universally mistaken for a boy due to her short blonde hair, masculine school uniform, and overall boyish appearance. She lives alone in a small apartment, Apartment 202, while her father is overseas receiving medical treatment, a situation that fosters her independent nature.
At her core, Hotaru is driven by an overwhelming and almost fanatical sense of justice. She introduces herself with a dramatic catchphrase, declaring her intent to condemn evil in all its forms. This compulsion leads her to physically confront bullies and anyone she perceives as taking advantage of the weak, as seen when she leaps from a third-story window to stop a shakedown or when she storms a host club to avenge a friend she believes was scammed. Her personality is vibrant, cheerful, and hot-blooded, often bordering on reckless. While she is genuinely friendly and kind, this righteous fury gives way to a more terrifying aspect when she is truly provoked or deeply immersed in competition. In these moments, her bloodlust becomes so palpable that it unnerves even seasoned players, revealing a hidden thrill-seeking side that craves the adrenaline of battle.
Her introduction to the world of airsoft survival games is an accident born of misunderstanding. After mistaking her neighbor, the charismatic host Masamune Matsuoka, for a swindler, she challenges him to a duel. When she loses and inadvertently destroys property, she is forced to join his team, Toy Gun Gun, to pay off her debt. Though initially reluctant, Hotaru quickly discovers a passion for the tactical intensity of survival games, finding that the sport satisfies her innate desire for combat in a controlled environment. Her role on the team is that of a vanguard; she has poor accuracy and minimal tactical sense, which often leads to her charging heedlessly into the fray. However, this weakness is offset by her extraordinary physical gifts. She possesses incredible speed, stamina, and brute strength that far exceeds her slender frame, making her a terrifying opponent in close-quarters combat. Her true potential emerges when she fights with a strong sense of purpose, unlocking a killer instinct that her teammates have likened to that of a monster.
Hotaru's key relationships are central to her development. Her dynamic with Masamune Matsuoka is particularly complex; he is initially oblivious to her gender and recruits her solely for her talent. She serves as the heart of the dysfunctional Toy Gun Gun team, acting as the glue that unites the members through her earnest and unbreakable spirit. She shares a close bond with her childhood friend Kanae Yajima, who is the only person initially aware of her true gender. As the series progresses, Hotaru matures from a hot-headed brawler into a more level-headed and down-to-earth individual, learning the value of teamwork and strategy while still retaining her core identity as a champion for justice.
