Description
Andre, whose full name is Reiji Andou, is one of the five first-year male students at Hachimitsu Academy. He is a tall and obese young man with black hair, black eyes, and pale skin. His most distinctive physical traits are his unusually large head, proportionally small facial features, and long ear lobes that extend down to his neck. Despite his heavy frame, he possesses considerable physical strength, being the strongest of the five boys as demonstrated when he arm-wrestled the Vice President Meiko Shiraki for five minutes straight.
At his core, Andre is a gentle-mannered and calm individual who genuinely cares for his friends, often placing their well-being ahead of his own. This is especially apparent in his treatment of his friend Jouji Nezu, for whom he shows a greater degree of emotional concern than the others. However, these kind qualities exist alongside an extreme and defining character trait: he is a profound masochist. He is also considered the most lecherous member of the group. His calm nature and deep care for his friends contrast sharply with his deviant desires, making him a complex and paradoxical figure. His role among the five boys is that of the optimist, often helping to lighten the mood when situations become difficult, and he serves as the group's primary source of brute strength.
Andre’s entire motivation centers on his need for punishment and humiliation, which he perceives as a form of validation and even affection. His primary source of this stimulation is Meiko Shiraki, the sadistic Vice President of the Underground Student Council. He develops an obsessive admiration for her, and her harsh disciplinary actions become the focus of his life. This desire is so potent that it can be used to manipulate him, as the student council later learns that the most effective way to torment Andre is to ignore him completely, depriving him of the punishment he craves.
His key relationships are defined by this masochistic tendency. His dynamic with Meiko Shiraki is strictly sadomasochistic; he lives to receive her abuse, and she initially uses this to control him. Later, he develops a significant relationship with Risa Bettou, the Vice President of the Aboveground Student Council. Unlike his purely submissive obsession with Meiko, his bond with Risa evolves into a more mutual and complex dominant-submissive partnership. Risa learns to engage with his masochism as a dominatrix, and Andre eventually becomes her devoted "pet," even going so far as to betray his friends to assist her side during the All-Student-Council Cavalry Battle. This relationship ultimately leads to his happiness, as he confesses his love for her and they are last seen together, having reconciled.
Throughout the story, Andre undergoes notable development, particularly in his philosophy of masochism. He devises a concept he calls "Andrenomics," or "investment-upon-return," in which his behavior temporarily shifts from purely submissive to ironically sadistic. He justifies this by believing that being cruel to Meiko now will result in a much more severe and satisfying punishment from her later, which is his ultimate goal. However, this plan fails when Meiko suffers a mental breakdown and regresses to a timid personality, leaving Andre broken and lost without his sadistic queen. His eventual development sees him finding a new sense of purpose and a healthier (by the series' standards) dynamic with Risa, moving beyond his singular obsession with Meiko.
As for notable abilities, Andre’s primary asset is his immense physical strength and endurance, which is directly linked to his masochism. His ability to absorb and even enjoy punishment makes him incredibly resilient in physical confrontations. This strength proves crucial on several occasions, such as when he single-handedly digs a tunnel during the escape arc, uses his power to distract Meiko in an arm-wrestling match, and later dominates the boys' races during the sports festival by using his bulk to eliminate the other competitors. His unique combination of physical power and psychological need for discipline makes him an unpredictable but often invaluable member of the group.
