Description
King is an S-Class hero ranked 7th in the Hero Association, famously known throughout the world as the strongest man on Earth. He is a tall man of 29 years with a lean build, standing at 187 centimeters, with slicked-back blonde hair, blue eyes, and a long, gaunt face. His most distinguishing physical feature is a set of three vertical scars running down the left side of his face. He does not wear a hero uniform, typically dressing in casual civilian clothes, and his demeanor projects an image of intimidating calm in almost any situation.
The truth of King is profoundly different from his public persona. He is, in reality, an ordinary and timid individual with no superhuman abilities, combat training, or physical strength beyond that of a typical civilian. He is a self-described otaku, or gaming enthusiast, who prefers a quiet, peaceful life and becomes easily frightened by danger, noise, and crowds. The source of his legendary reputation is a series of coincidences. Years prior to the start of the story, he was attacked by a monster and rescued by a then-unknown Saitama, receiving the scars on his face during the incident. On five separate subsequent occasions, King happened to arrive at the scene of a monster attack immediately after Saitama had defeated the creature. Witnesses and the Hero Association mistakenly attributed the victories to King, and he was recruited as an S-Class hero based on these perceived feats without ever undergoing a physical examination.
The public and nearly all other heroes believe wholeheartedly in King’s power. He is honored with the title of the strongest man on Earth, and his presence alone is said to be enough to terrify monsters into submission. His most famous attributed trait is the King Engine, a loud, rumbling sound that seems to emanate from him when he enters a battle state, which is rumored to shake the earth and demoralize his foes. In a cruel irony, the King Engine is actually the sound of his own heart pounding wildly and audibly from sheer, uncontrollable terror when he finds himself in dangerous situations. To maintain his fraudulent position, King has become a master of bluffing, using his intimidating appearance and invented techniques, such as the fictitious Ultimate Hellfire Wavemotion Cannon, to stall for time or trick opponents into surrendering without a fight.
King’s role in the story is deeply tied to his relationship with Saitama, the true hero who unknowingly enabled his rise to fame. After a monster followed King to his home, Saitama again appeared and saved him. Recognizing his savior from years before, a guilt-ridden King confessed the entire truth about his fraudulent hero status to Saitama. Rather than being angry, Saitama was unconcerned with fame and accepted the secret. This event forms the basis of their unique and close friendship. Saitama is one of the only people who knows King’s secret, and in turn, King is one of the few who understands Saitama’s frustration at being unrecognized. Their bond is largely centered on playing video games at Saitama’s apartment, where King’s true, exceptional talent emerges. Despite being powerless in reality, King is a world-class master of fighting games and can effortlessly defeat Saitama, even with severe handicaps, making him the only person capable of making Saitama feel genuine defeat and frustration.
Throughout the series, King experiences subtle but meaningful character development. Initially paralyzed by the fear of his secret being exposed and the pressure of his false title, he begins to find a measure of courage. He learns to use his reputation strategically, deliberately bluffing to protect others or buy time until a real hero, often Saitama, can arrive. In the Monster Association arc and subsequent storylines, King becomes increasingly motivated by his own feelings of inadequacy and the desire to truly live up to his heroic image, leading him to seek out martial arts training from masters like Bang, though his legendary status ironically causes them all to refuse, believing he has nothing to learn from them. His journey is one of accepting his limitations while still finding a way to be useful, using his wits, his luck, and his infamous presence to influence events. His only genuine power, aside from his gaming skill, might be described as an extraordinarily potent, unconscious form of luck that consistently places him at the right moment for a monster to be defeated by another hero, cementing his legend and ensuring his own survival.
