Description
Ayami Cherryblossom is the Object maintenance chief for the 37th Mobile Maintenance Battalion. She is an elderly woman with grey hair typically tied into a bun, often seen wearing her work uniform with a pair of goggles pushed up on her forehead. Originally a resident of the Japanese Islands within the territory of the Capitalist Corporations, she worked there as a skilled technician. Her life changed when her daughter and son-in-law, who were engaged in charitable work to distribute agricultural technology, were accused of information terrorism by a large convenience store conglomerate due to an advertising slogan. Facing persecution, they were forced to flee as refugees, eventually finding shelter in the Legitimacy Kingdom. Her escape was made easier due to the machinations of her late husband, Yamato, whose brain was incorporated into the Object known as Ichirei Shikon. Because of her deep knowledge of Object technology, she received a warmer welcome than most refugees.

Known simply as the old maintenance lady by the soldiers, Ayami has a no-nonsense and gruff personality, but she cares deeply for her work and the people around her. She is highly respected, even by officers like Frolaytia Capistrano, though her strict dedication to her job also makes her a feared figure. She is not one to tolerate foolishness, often scolding younger soldiers like Quenser Barbotage for wasting opportunities to learn or for not taking their future seriously. Despite her advanced age, she possesses remarkable physical resilience, able to work on the scaffolding of an Object during a turbulent sea voyage without difficulty while others struggle to stand.

Her primary role in the story is to maintain and repair the Baby Magnum, the Object piloted by Milinda Brantini. Beyond her technical duties, she acts as a mentor and a source of historical perspective for the main characters, particularly Quenser. Having lived through the era when the first Objects were developed and deployed, she possesses a wealth of knowledge about Object technology and the political history of their world, which she imparts to the younger generation. Her personal motivations are deeply tied to her family. After losing her husband and being forced to flee her home, her priority is to protect her surviving relatives, which include her daughter Shikibu, her son-in-law Iekazu, and her granddaughter Orihime. This protective instinct drives her to take significant risks, such as when she abandoned her post during the Global Shadow conflict to evacuate her family from a threatened immigrant city.

Her relationships with the main cast are defined by her role as a mentor. She frequently has Quenser assist her with maintenance, using these sessions to teach him about the intricacies of Objects and challenge him to think about his career path. While she is often irritable with his antics, this interaction demonstrates her investment in his development. She has a connection to the superweapon Ichirei Shikon, which contacted her during a battle, recognizing the presence of her deceased husband within its system. This link to the past highlights her long history with the very technology that defines their era.

Ayami shows development through her actions in critical moments, moving from a purely support-based background role to taking direct action. During an attack on her ship, she proved her resourcefulness by fighting off enemy soldiers with a flamethrower. She also demonstrated a pragmatic and cunning side, suggesting that a defeated allied Object could be scuttled as a false offering to prevent enemy analysis, showcasing a strategic mind sharpened by years of experience. Her skills are considerable, as she is the chief maintenance officer of the battalion, responsible for keeping the Baby Magnum battle-ready. Her expertise is so valued that her knowledge of Island Nation Objects was used to brief pilots before combat. She is not just a mechanic but a living repository of knowledge from the dawn of the Object era, making her an invaluable asset to the 37th Mobile Maintenance Battalion.
