Description
Nanami Momozono is the central protagonist of Kamisama Kiss, a high school girl whose life is upended when her irresponsible father abandons her due to gambling debts, leaving her homeless. While sitting in a park, she rescues a man named Mikage from a dog, and in gratitude he offers her his home; this turns out to be the Mikage Shrine, and through a kiss on her forehead he transfers his position as land god to her. Nanami begins her divine role with very little spiritual power, but she gradually learns to balance her godly duties with her schoolwork.

Kind, optimistic, and deeply caring, Nanami is emotionally expressive and cries openly when faced with hardship, an honesty that affects both humans and yokai. She is also plucky and determined, refusing to give up even when the odds are against her. Her wit, resourcefulness, and stubborn courage help her survive the many supernatural dangers she encounters. Despite her gentle nature, she is fiercely protective of those she loves and will confront anyone who crosses a line, sometimes physically hitting Tomoe or Mizuki when they provoke her. She has a habit of making promises without thinking through the consequences, and she is known for her creativity in devising unconventional plans. Nanami holds a strong belief that humans and yokai can genuinely love each other, a conviction she maintains even when others call it naive.

Nanami’s early motivation is simply to survive and find a stable home, but as she grows into her role as land god of the Mikage Shrine, her motivation shifts toward protecting her found family and proving her worth as a deity. She works hard to gain the respect and loyalty of the shrine’s spirits and to help those in need, often at her own expense. Her desire to create a better life for herself and to ensure the happiness of others drives her actions throughout the story.

As the main heroine, Nanami is the human land god of the Mikage Shrine. After the former god Mikage transfers his status to her, she must navigate a world filled with yokai and other supernatural beings while also attending high school. She begins with minimal spiritual power but gradually acquires abilities through training and experience. Her role expands as she becomes involved in conflicts with powerful yokai, travels into the past, and eventually solidifies her position as a genuine deity.

Key relationships shape Nanami’s journey. Tomoe is her fox familiar, initially disdainful of serving a human, but over time he grows to respect and love her; their relationship evolves from irritation into deep devotion and eventually marriage. Mikage is the land god who gives her the shrine and sets her destiny in motion. Mizuki, a snake yokai, becomes attached to her and changes through her kindness. The tengu of Kurama Mountain, especially Kurama Shinjirou, regard her with great admiration and call her “Celestial Maiden” or “elder sister.” Her first real human friends are Kei and Ami, who ground her in normal life. Her lineage connects her to Yukiji and Hiiragi, figures from Tomoe’s past, which becomes significant during the time travel arc.

Nanami undergoes significant character development. She starts as a powerless, homeless teenager but grows into a confident and capable deity. A pivotal arc involves her traveling into the past, where her soul is implanted into Yukiji’s body, and she witnesses Tomoe’s former hatred for humans. Despite this, she fights back, escapes, and later returns to protect Yukiji and heal a wounded child Tomoe with peach pills. She also serves as a substitute bride and promises to be Tomoe’s wife in that era, unknowingly tying their fates together. These experiences teach her the depth of her own strength and the complexities of love and sacrifice. By the end, she evolves from a shy girl into a confident land god who sacrifices her divine power to protect Tomoe and others.

Notable abilities begin with the use of talismans to create spiritual effects. She gains the power of purification, which she develops as she grows into her role. As master of Tomoe and Mizuki, her earnest words can compel obedience through word restraint. She helps revive a dormant thousand-year-old sakura tree on Kurama Mountain, endearing her to the tengu. She obtains a healing peach elixir that can cure injury and disease. Although human, she possesses a remarkably strong spirit, significant physical strength for her size, and a tenacity that often surprises stronger beings. Her human emotions and unwavering kindness prove to be among her greatest assets.
