Description
Kurumi Ebisuzawa is a central character in School-Live!, recognized as the primary combatant and guardian of the school’s survival circle. She is a third-year high school student, though she often appears calm and detached compared to her more energetic classmates. Physically, Kurumi is notable for her athletic build and the shovel she carries at all times, which serves as her primary weapon against the zombie-like infected that overrun the outside world.

In terms of background, Kurumi was originally a member of the school’s track and field team, which explains her exceptional speed, endurance, and agility. Before the outbreak, she was a diligent athlete aiming for competition success, but the collapse of society forced her to channel those abilities entirely into survival. Unlike the other main characters, who cope with the apocalypse through psychological denial or logistical planning, Kurumi confronts its horror directly every day, engaging in close-quarters combat to protect her friends.

Personality-wise, Kurumi is quiet, observant, and pragmatic. She rarely displays strong emotions, preferring to listen and act rather than speak. Her demeanor can appear cold or aloof, but this is a protective mechanism developed from the constant burden of killing infected beings—some of whom were once people she might have known. Beneath her stoic surface lies deep loyalty and a fierce will to protect the group, especially the more fragile members. She does not indulge in the fantasy that the world remains normal, making her the one most grounded in grim reality. However, she also struggles with guilt and trauma, fearing that she might become infected or lose her humanity.

Kurumi’s primary motivation is to keep her friends alive at any cost. She takes on the role of the fighter willingly, understanding that without her combat skills, the group would have little chance of scavenging for supplies or clearing escape routes. Her sense of purpose is tied directly to her ability to protect others, and she pushes herself to physical and emotional extremes to fulfill that role. Over time, she also seeks a way to end the endless cycle of violence and survival, hoping for a future where she no longer needs to wield her shovel.

In the group dynamic, Kurumi acts as the silent guardian. She has a notably close bond with Yuki Takeya, the group’s cheerful and delusional member, whom Kurumi protects with particular tenderness—perhaps because Yuki’s innocence provides an emotional anchor. Her relationship with Yuuri Wakasa, the de facto leader, is one of mutual trust and unspoken understanding; Yuuri often manages supplies and morale while Kurumi handles threats. With Miki Naoki, a later addition to the group, Kurumi shares a more equal partnership in facing reality, though Miki’s initial reluctance to fight strains their rapport. Over time, Kurumi respects Miki’s growing courage.

Kurumi’s character development is marked by a slow erosion of her emotional armor. Early on, she appears nearly invulnerable, dispatching infected with mechanical efficiency. As the story progresses, the psychological toll becomes visible. She suffers a near-infection that forces the group to confront her mortality directly, and she begins to show signs of exhaustion, fear, and despair. A pivotal moment occurs when she must accept help from others rather than standing alone, learning that vulnerability does not equal weakness. Her arc moves from isolated protector to someone who allows herself to rely on her friends while still wielding her shovel as a symbol of resolve rather than just violence.

Notable abilities include her extraordinary physical prowess, specifically her speed and precision with a shovel. She uses a standard digging shovel modified for combat, developing her own fighting style that combines thrusts, swings, and acrobatic dodges. Her track and field training gives her explosive sprinting speed and the stamina to fight multiple infected in succession. Additionally, she has a high pain tolerance and a sharp situational awareness, allowing her to spot threats before others do. Mentally, she possesses strong compartmentalization skills, though this ability weakens as the strain of survival accumulates. Unlike the others, she never succumbs to denial about the infected’s true nature, which makes her both the group’s realist and the one most at risk of psychological collapse. Her ability to continue fighting despite that awareness is her greatest strength.
