Description
Koneko Tojo, originally named Shirone, is a female protagonist in High School DxD BorN. She is a first-year student at Kuoh Academy and a member of the Occult Research Club, serving as Rias Gremory's Rook. Her background is deeply rooted in tragedy. She is a Nekoshou, a rare and powerful subspecies of the Nekomata, a cat-like youkai. Her mother was a Nekomata and her human father died in an experiment that also claimed her mother. She and her older sister Kuroka were taken in by a devil who intended to use them for experiments. When Kuroka killed their master to protect her, Koneko was slated for execution by the devils as a preventive measure. She was saved by Sirzechs Lucifer and entrusted to his sister, Rias, who gave her the name Koneko.
Initially, Koneko's personality is quiet, stoic, and emotionally withdrawn as a direct result of this traumatic past. She rarely displays emotions and is blunt with her words, often insulting Issei Hyoudou for his perverted tendencies. Despite her cold exterior, she deeply cares for her comrades and is fiercely protective of them in battle. Her primary motivation stems from a desire to overcome the fear of her own Nekomata powers, which she associates with the tragedy involving her sister. She suppresses her abilities, fearing she will lose control like Kuroka did.
Her role in the story shifts from a reserved supporting fighter to a key emotional and physical pillar of the peerage. A pivotal point in her development occurs when Issei helps her conquer her fear of using Senjutsu. This event catalyzes a significant personality shift; she begins to embrace her cat-like nature, speaking with a cat-like verbal tic and openly showing affection and attraction toward Issei. Her feelings develop into romantic love, leading to moments of jealousy and a growing desire to be seen as a woman by him. She also begins the process of reconciling with her sister Kuroka, who later returns to help her master her abilities.
Key relationships define her arc. Her bond with Rias is one of deep gratitude and loyalty, as Rias provided her with a home and a new family. Her evolving relationship with Issei is central to her emotional growth, moving from cold disdain to affectionate teasing and genuine romantic interest. Her complex relationship with her sister Kuroka evolves from a source of trauma to a partnership, as they work to mend their fractured family.
In terms of abilities, Koneko is a formidable hand-to-hand combatant with immense physical strength and defense, a trait amplified by her status as a Rook. As a Nekoshou, she is a natural adept of Senjutsu, the art of controlling ki, which she uses to enhance her physical strikes, heal injuries, and restore stamina. She can shroud herself in Touki, a fighting spirit aura that boosts her power. She also learns Youjutsu, which governs illusions and transformations, and develops the advanced Bouchujutsu healing technique. A notable signature ability is Kasha, where she summons wheels of purification fire to incinerate her enemies. As she accepts her heritage, she unlocks further forms, including a Nekomata Mode and the powerful Shirone Mode, which increases her abilities considerably and grants her the appearance of a more mature woman. Through her journey, she grows from a traumatized, silent girl into a confident, powerful, and emotionally open warrior.
