TV-Series
Description
Alex Benedetto is a central character in the story, introduced as a former prostitute working in the crime-ridden city of Ergastulum. She is a young woman of medium height with a well-proportioned figure, long dark hair, and distinctive blue eyes. Her physical appearance is noted for her slightly tanned or dark skin, suggesting a mixed ethnic background with African and Asian roots.
Initially, Alex is trapped in a life of abuse and exploitation under her pimp, Barry. She endures constant violence and is kept under control with a drug called TB, which induces a drowsy, compliant state and contributes to her memory loss. During one of their jobs, the handymen Worick Arcangelo and Nicolas Brown are ordered to eliminate her along with the rest of Barry's organization. However, Worick decides to spare her life and claims her as their loot, effectively saving her. With nowhere else to go, she begins working as the secretary for their agency, the Benriya, taking care of cooking, cleaning, and errands.
Personality-wise, Alex is generally calm, kind, and attentive towards others. Despite her traumatic past, she displays a quiet bravery and a protective instinct, even for people she does not know. She can be somewhat shy and struggles with feelings of inferiority, which are natural consequences of the dehumanizing treatment she suffered. Her experiences have left her with deep psychological scars, including post-traumatic stress and terrifying hallucinations of her former pimp, which she initially tries to suppress by abusing drugs again. Overcoming this dependency and beginning to rebuild her life is a significant part of her personal journey, and as her condition improves, fragmented memories of her past begin to return, most notably the existence of her younger brother, Emilio, whom she had forgotten.
Her role in the story is primarily that of a new, more vulnerable perspective on the violent world of Ergastulum. She acts as an anchor to humanity for Worick and Nicolas, who are both deeply embedded in the city's criminal underbelly. Her presence forces them to confront their own morality and offers a sense of normalcy in their otherwise brutal lives. Alex is not a typical fighter; she has no superhuman abilities. However, she is not entirely helpless and has shown a willingness to use a metal pipe to defend herself if necessary. Her true strengths lie in her moral courage, resilience, and emotional intelligence.
The relationships Alex forms with the two handymen are central to her development. With Worick, she shares a bond of friendship and gratitude. He is the one who chose to save her, and he acts as a protector and caretaker, though he often hides his genuine concern behind a flirtatious and teasing demeanor. Her relationship with Nicolas is more complex and nonverbal. Initially, he is distant and brusque, but he consistently places himself in danger to protect her. In a notable effort to bridge the communication gap between them, Alex begins learning sign language, a gesture that signifies her growing respect and care for him. As the story progresses, it is implied that her connection to Nicolas may run deeper, with hints that they might have met before her arrival in Ergastulum.
Throughout the narrative, Alex strives for independence and refuses to be a burden to the people who saved her. She discovers a talent for singing, often humming to herself, and eventually finds part-time work as a singer and entertainer at a brothel called Bastard. This job represents a significant step in her journey, allowing her to forge her own path and reclaim her identity and dignity on her own terms.
