Description
Mage Nanashiro is a character from the anime Dance with Devils, serving as one of its primary male protagonists. Within the human world, his public identity is that of a high school student and the secretary of the student council at Shikō Academy, where he is a third-year student. In truth, he is a devil, described as a rising new power who emerged during a period of turmoil in the demon realm. Information regarding his past prior to the events of the story is largely not detailed, though it is established that he comes from a lineage that was once among the six great noble families of the demon world, with his family having been wiped out until only he remained.

Physically, Mage is notably tall, standing at 188 centimeters, with a toned and muscular build. He has shoulder-length blonde hair, the upper portion of which is tied back in a bun with a green ribbon, and bright yellow eyes. His typical attire is a variation of the school uniform, often wearing a sleeveless collared shirt with a matching yellow tie and dark blue pants, with his uniform vest worn only halfway.

In terms of personality, Mage is characterized as supremely self-centered, arrogant, and impulsive, living his life according to his own whims and instincts. He has a reputation for being vulgar, violent, and sadistic, frequently resorting to force and disregarding rules, which has earned him nicknames such as the "self-centered destroyer". He is overconfident and cocky, firmly believing that he can obtain anything he desires through his own power. Despite this fearsome exterior, he possesses a more gentle and caring side, though it is one he shows only on specific occasions. He can be easily flustered, and underneath his bravado, he is described as being surprisingly pure-hearted and even somewhat naive, as seen when he is easily tricked by the jokes of his associate, Urie Sogami. Among the devils, he is considered the most humane in his behavior, maintaining good relationships with many of his underclassmen at school whom he considers his subordinates, and enjoys social activities like going to karaoke with them.

Mage's core motivation is driven by a belief that power and strength are paramount. His role in the story becomes deeply entangled with the heroine, Ritsuka Tachibana, as the various devils compete for the forbidden grimoire. His relationships with other student council members, such as Rem Kaginuki and Urie Sogami, are often strained or characterized by rivalry, described as not being on good terms. His most significant relationship development occurs with Ritsuka. Initially, he attempts to use his demonic abilities to seduce her and make her fall for him in order to learn the grimoire's location, but his interactions with her reveal a softer, more vulnerable side of his personality.

Mage demonstrates notable development throughout the narrative. While he begins as a purely self-serving and arrogant devil, he eventually displays genuine care and devotion, a fierce protective instinct for Ritsuka that cracks his rough exterior. In a key moment, when his fight with Lindo Tachibana threatens to harm Ritsuka, he pulls back his attack in shock and horror to avoid striking her, showing that his concern for her safety overrides his combative instincts. Another instance highlighting his clumsy yet earnest nature involves him using his powers to transport Ritsuka across different countries, culminating in an attempt to show her a beautiful sunset over the ocean. However, her tears cause him to panic, leading him to accidentally drop her into the sea, after which he frantically dives in to save her and sincerely apologizes for his actions.

As a devil, Mage wields a number of supernatural abilities. He possesses immense physical strength and is a highly skilled master of hand-to-hand combat, capable of easily defeating groups of human adversaries. His primary elemental power is the ability to generate and manipulate lightning, which is typically yellow in color but shifts to a mix of red and blue when he is fighting seriously. He can also levitate, allowing him to walk on air, and can teleport himself and others over short distances. Furthermore, he has the unique ability to create spatial tears, which serve as portals to another dimension that he can freely enter, using them primarily for escape and transportation. This other dimension is depicted as a seemingly ruined space with a long, endless path. In his human guise, he is a member of the school's track club and his stated hobby is flaunting his own strength.
